NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK employing around 40,000 staff in a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and job roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health care services to a population of over 1.15 million and a wider population of 2.2 million when our regional and national services are included.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for Epilepsy Service for a neurology research nurse at Band 7 level to support an on-going real-world audit and contribute to ongoing improvement work.
The successful candidate will work in partnership with the Principal Investigator and Consultant colleagues in the West of Scotland epilepsy team the post holder will facilitate the delivery of two key clinical priorities.
* Real world audit on use and outcome of people living with drug resistant focal epilepsy prescribed Cenobamate, the most recently approved. The aim is to consider the short-term outcomes and also health care resource use over the longer period.
* Service improvement- There are a number of initiatives ongoing within the West of Scotland (WoS) Epilepsy team aimed at improving access to care and outcomes in people living with epilepsy (PWE). This is part of a Scottish Government supported initiative termed the Scottish epilepsy Register. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to this ongoing service improvement piece.
Approximately 30% of patients with epilepsy do not experience a sustained period of seizure freedom. With every unsuccessful anti-seizure medication (ASM) trial, the probability of seizure freedom diminishes significantly and after the third failed ASM the chances of seizure freedom are less than 10%. Having a nurse dedicated to audit this would improve patient outcomes by measuring rates of admission, rates of unscheduled care, use of additional adjuvant ASM (inc rescue medications) and overall burden ASM use and use of Scottish Ambulance Service call outs. Recruiting to this post will, enable the service to combine the granular audit data with the routine health data, we aim to obtain valuable insight into the experience of clinicians using cenobamate in the largest tertiary epilepsy centre in Scotland.
The appointed candidate will share improvement across the service and align priorities for health care priorities
* Reducing Excess Mortality in Epilepsy
* Women with epilepsy during pregnancy
* Applying the MHRA recommendation for Valproate
This post will support & facilitate change for the service to improve patient outcomes and ensure safe, effective and person centred care is delivered at every opportunity.
