Job Purpose

We have an opportunity for a Legal Director to join the Real Estate practice. In this role you will be expected to act as a firm leader in your practice area and take on a key supervisory/leadership role for junior lawyers. You should contribute to the management of the practice area, especially decisions relating to your own team.

As a Legal Director you should be confident in taking charge of managing the firm's relationship with key clients and be able to maintain multiple sustained relationships with clients. You should also be responsible for building the competence of your team by setting the tone and standards to motivate others to give their best to the business and clients. Legal Directors are expected to lead the way in knowledge transfer across the firm to benefit the business and apply themselves to complex, high‑risk, high‑value or high‑profile client transactions/matters.

Legal Directors are engaged in making commercial decisions to help implement Brodies' strategy in a profitable or client‑focused way.

The role will include having a vital role in major projects and high‑value cross border deals, and running your own independent transactions for Scottish and London‑based clients active in Scotland. Some of the work you will be involved in includes:

* Acting for private equity and listed funds, High Net Worth Individuals, UK institutions and overseas investors in the sale and acquisition of investment properties in Scotland
* Asset management work on high‑profile properties, including lettings and advising on lease re‑gears and variations, and ancillary documentation
* Acting in the acquisition and sale of shopping centres, retail parks and high‑value High St retail
* Acting on the Scottish real estate elements of corporate acquisitions, including input into Share Purchase Agreements for UK and international clients
* Acting for traditional and new lenders in high‑value financings across various real‑estate sectors
* Acting on the sale, purchase, ongoing management and funding of student accommodation projects throughout Scotland for UK and international institutional funds and private equity clients
* Working alongside City and US law firms on the Scottish end of UK‑wide or pan‑European property portfolio acquisitions and disposals


Core Tasks

* Working with, and supported by, other Senior Associates and Solicitors as part of the 'team' and working closely with our banking, corporate, planning and construction teams
* Shaping commercial solutions to problems and helping deliver transactions on time
* Title examination, lease reporting and negotiation of sale and purchase contracts
* Drafting and negotiating leases of prime office, industrial and retail properties, acting primarily for landlords/investors
* Asset management including dealing with letting documentation and re‑gears, in respect of industrial, retail and office properties
* Working with English and US law firms in cross border deals, reporting to them or directly to their clients
* Working alongside and helping lead junior lawyers
* Harnessing IT to deliver work as efficiently as possible
* Be aware of Brodies' information security policies, and protect information assets from unauthorised access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference at all times.


Person Specification & Skills

* Experienced in Scottish real estate transactions and sound understanding of Scots real estate law
* Takes a pragmatic and commercial approach to transactions
* Ability to develop and maintain a long‑term sustainable focus for business development and puts planning into action
* Lead as a business manager, behaving commercially to bring in work and keep colleagues happy, making sure work gets carried out at the appropriate level
* Ability to spot areas where business improvements are needed and devise and effectively implement solutions
* Makes a quantifiable contribution to the business through business development activities
* Supports the development of the team's internal and external profile
* Established strong external network and secures new and repeat work for the firm
