Title: Electrical Design Engineer

Reports to: Electrical Design Lead

Contract: 6 Months FTC (with the opportunity to become permanent)

About Us: Join Armstrong Fluid Technology, a global leader in fluid-flow innovation with over 1,400 colleagues across eight manufacturing facilities worldwide. At Armstrong, we don’t just design and manufacture products. We engineer solutions that make a lasting difference for our customers and the planet.

We are seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of electrical systems within Armstrong’s modular HVAC, packaged plant room, and capital equipment solutions. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing compliant, safe, and cost-effective electrical designs that align with customer specifications, industry standards, and internal quality procedures.

This is a technically focused role requiring hands‑on design capability, strong collaboration with mechanical and manufacturing teams, and a detailed understanding of electrical standards and regulations.

Job Accountability

Electrical System Design & Development:
* Undertake electrical designs in accordance with company Standard Operating Procedures (SOP EBD-PP-001).
* Carry out design feasibility studies including assessment of supply characteristics, load balance, earthing, and cable sizing.
* Produce accurate load schedules, cable calculations, and protective device coordination studies using Trimble ProDesign or equivalent software.
* Prepare detailed design deliverables including Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), block cable diagrams, switchboard layouts, and earthing/bonding schematics.
Compliance & Technical Assurance:
* Ensure all designs meet applicable standards, including BS 7671, IEC 60204-1, EN 60364-1, and relevant EU/UK directives (Machinery, Low Voltage, EMC).
* Conduct and document peer reviews to verify compliance, buildability, and maintainability of electrical designs.
* Integrate safety considerations such as isolation, lock‑off, and access provisions within the design.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration:
* Liaise with Mechanical, Controls, and Manufacturing Engineering teams to ensure system integration and production readiness.
* Support procurement and production teams through design clarification, technical queries, and design change coordination.
* Participate in design review meetings and ensure timely delivery of electrical documentation to meet project schedules.
Documentation & Governance:
* Maintain up‑to‑date design records, revision control, and design change logs.
* Generate and manage documentation for approval, including design risk assessments and component data sheets.
* Support the creation of electrical drawing packs for build and test, ensuring accuracy and traceability.
* Identify opportunities to standardise and simplify design processes across multiple project types.
* Contribute to the development of design templates, component libraries, and digital design tools.
* Support lessons‑learned sessions and feedback into design practice improvements.

What We’re Looking For

To thrive in this role, you should bring:

* Strong attention to technical accuracy, compliance, and detail.
* Collaborative approach with mechanical and manufacturing disciplines.
* Ability to interpret complex specifications and apply sound engineering judgment.
* Effective communication and documentation skills for multidisciplinary environments.

Key Responsibilities

* Undertake electrical designs in accordance with company Standard Operating Procedures (SOP EBD-PP-001).
* Carry out preliminary assessments, including analysis of supply characteristics, earthing arrangements, and cable requirements.
* Review project P&IDs, mechanical submittals, and motor data sheets to inform design.
* Perform load calculations and prepare accurate load schedules with diversity factors applied.
* Produce detailed Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), earthing and bonding diagrams, and cable schedules.
* Experienced using Trimble Pro Design or equivalent software to generate:
* Switchboard and distribution board layouts/schedules
* Fault current, disconnection time, and discrimination studies
* Prepare block cable diagrams and, where applicable, Quick Connect Diagrams for site deployment.
* Conduct peer reviews and ensure compliance with BS 7671 and other applicable standards.
* Collaborate with project managers, mechanical engineers, and clients to ensure designs meet specifications and programme requirements.
* Maintain accurate records, revision control, and documentation throughout the design lifecycle.
* Ensure designs account for safe isolation, maintenance access, and buildability.

Desired Qualifications & Experience

* Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
* Demonstrated experience in electrical design for building services, packaged plant rooms, or industrial systems.
* Strong working knowledge of BS 7671:2018 (18th Edition) and related IET guidance documents.
* Proficiency with Trimble ProDesign or equivalent design/calculation software.
* Solid understanding of earthing, bonding, protection, and discrimination principles.
* Familiarity with applicable electrical standards and directives including:
* IET Electrical Installation Design Guide
* IEC 60204-1 (Electrical Equipment of Machines)
* EN 60364-1 (Low Voltage Electrical Installations)
* Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC
* Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU
* Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards professional registration (IET or equivalent).
* Experience with modular or packaged plant room design and build projects.
* Knowledge of BIM/Revit or CAD‑based electrical drafting tools.
* Experience within construction or industrial project delivery environments.

Key Skills

* Strong problem‑solving and analytical ability with a practical mindset.
* Competence in producing clear, accurate, and high‑quality technical documentation.
* Excellent communication and teamwork skills in multidisciplinary project teams.
* High attention to detail and commitment to safety, quality, and compliance.
* Ability to manage workload, meet deadlines, and work autonomously under minimal supervision.
