As Head of Operations, you will take ownership of all day-to-day and strategic operational activities across the business. Reporting to the Managing Director, you’ll lead a diverse workforce across drivers, estates, compliance, and operational planning, ensuring the smooth, safe, and efficient deployment of the company’s fleet across multiple sectors.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & People Management
* Lead and inspire teams across operations, driving, estates, and compliance
* Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies for operational staff
* Conduct regular appraisals, performance reviews, and driver engagement sessions
* Foster a positive, accountable culture focused on safety, service, and teamwork
* Develop and track KPIs for punctuality, utilisation, safety, and reliability
* Present monthly performance reports to senior leadership
Service Delivery & Planning
* Ensure reliable, compliant delivery of all contracted services
* Maintain 7-day operational cover through strategic rota and holiday planning
* Manage real-time decision-making in the face of breakdowns, absences, or service disruptions
Compliance & Safety
* Ensure adherence to all O Licence requirements and driver hours legislation
* Maintain systems for tachograph data, vehicle compliance, and incident management
* Lead investigations into accidents and incidents, reducing risk through retraining and oversight
Customer & Stakeholder Engagement
* Uphold high levels of customer service across all team interactions
* Manage escalated complaints and incidents in line with company standards
Person Specification
* Proven senior leadership in transport, logistics, or a regulated operational environment
* Strong working knowledge of transport legislation and compliance frameworks
* Experience managing large, shift-based or 24/7 teams
* High-level planning, forecasting, and real-time decision-making ability
* Excellent communication and people management skills
* Proficiency with operational tools and Microsoft Office
