HLTA / Mentor – Specialist SEN Provision (Fareham, PO16)
Prospero Teaching is recruiting for an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) or Mentor to join a specialist provision in Fareham (PO16). This setting supports secondary-aged pupils with complex needs, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC). The provision offers a therapeutic and highly personalised approach to education, focusing on emotional wellbeing, life skills, and academic development.
Role Overview
This is a hands-on, rewarding role suited to someone confident in working with pupils who present with challenging behaviour. You will be responsible for delivering lessons, mentoring pupils, and supporting their holistic development both in the classroom and in the wider community.
Key Responsibilities
1. Deliver one-to-one and small group teaching across a range of subjects
2. Plan and lead engaging, differentiated lessons tailored to individual needs
3. Provide pastoral support and act as a trusted adult for vulnerable learners
4. Work independently with pupils in the community to support life skills and social development
5. Build strong relationships with pupils who may struggle to trust adults
6. Deliver practical lessons in Cooking, Art, Construction, IT, and other vocational subjects
7. Support and participate in outdoor activities such as sailing, canoeing, and bushcraft
8. Teach Functional Skills English and Maths
9. Offer mentoring and counselling-style support to promote emotional resilience
10. Collaborate with therapists, teachers, and external agencies to develop personalised learning plans
Essential Requirements
11. HLTA qualification or relevant experience
12. Proven experience supporting pupils with SEMH and ASC
13. Confident in lesson planning and delivering tailored learning
14. Skilled in behaviour management and de-escalation strategies
15. Comfortable with lone working in the community
16. Natural ability to form relationships with pupils who present with challenging behaviour
17. Must be a driver with access to a vehicle
18. Must be available Monday to Friday, 08:00-16:30 or 08:30-17:00
19. Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willing to apply)
20. Right to work in the UK
21. Two professional child-related references

22. Actual salary range: £24,000 – £28,000 per annum
