Signal Processing Systems Engineer Location: Southampton (primarily onsite) Contract: 6 months Rate: £58.67/hour PAYE (£67.20/hour incl. holiday) or £80/hour Umbrella We seek an engineer who has worked in a military / defence environment / industry within the last 12 months Role Overview The engineer will support the development of advanced communications systems across multiple disciplines, including RF integration, digital signal processing, free-space optical communications, waveforms, and network engineering. The role involves delivering defined work packages and contributing to system-level design, analysis, and modelling activities. Key Responsibilities Manage and interpret system requirements. Conduct feasibility studies and contribute to communication system architecture design. Model and simulate communication waveforms and networks (e.g., in MATLAB). Produce high-quality technical documentation and reports. Provide progress updates to the Project Engineering Lead. Collaborate with waveform engineering teams across airborne communication programmes. Manage personal workload and contribute positively to team delivery. Engage with internal stakeholders, suppliers, and customers as needed. Required Experience & Skills Background in military or civil communication systems development. Proficiency in communication system modelling/analysis tools (MATLAB or similar). Strong technical writing and documentation skills. Desirable Experience & Knowledge Communication air-interface protocols, modulation, and coding schemes. Mobile communication waveforms and associated network technologies. RF system hardware (transmitters, receivers, SDRs, filtering). Communications security (COMSEC) principles. Digital modulation, FEC channel coding, digital filtering. Understanding of FPGA-oriented algorithm optimisation.
