The Opportunity
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal ERS Systems Engineer to lead the technical definition, integration, and trackside performance of an advanced Energy Recovery System (ERS) within a top‑tier motorsport environment. You will provide technical leadership across the full ERS lifecycle from concept and development through validation, race deployment, and continuous optimisation.
Key Responsibilities
* Own the end‑to‑end ERS system architecture, ensuring seamless integration of MGU, MCU, DC‑DC, fluid pumps, and battery systems
* Define system requirements, interfaces, and operating parameters aligned to regulatory and performance targets
* Lead system design reviews, FMEA activities, and reliability improvement initiatives
* Develop and optimise ERS control strategies, including energy harvesting, deployment, thermal management, and system efficiency
* Collaborate closely with controls, power electronics, and calibration teams to refine system performance across test and race conditions
* Conduct detailed performance and fault analysis using tools such as McLaren ATLAS, System Monitor, and ETAS INCA
* Develop analytics tools and automated workflows for KPI tracking, system health monitoring, and reliability assessment
* Provide trackside engineering support across races, tests, and partner events in North America, acting as the senior ERS authority
* Support live system monitoring, diagnostics, and rapid fault resolution in time‑critical environments
* Lead post‑event analysis, driving continuous improvement through development and calibration updates
* Act as the technical focal point for ERS across the wider engineering organisation
* Mentor and support junior engineers, promoting technical excellence and best practice
* Interface with suppliers, partners, and regulatory bodies on ERS‑related matters
Key Experience
* Energy Recovery Systems (ERS)
* Battery Management Systems (BMS)
* Calibration
* Powertrain systems
* Proven and demonstrable experience in motorsport or high‑performance hybrid/EV systems, ideally within: IndyCar, Formula E, Formula 1, or LMP/Hypercar
Qualifications
* Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related discipline
Skills & Expertise
* Deep understanding of hybrid ERS architectures, including MGU operation, power electronics, battery systems, and thermal management
* Strong knowledge of high‑voltage systems, safety standards, and fault management
* Hands‑on experience with:
o ETAS INCA
o System Monitor (or equivalent)
o MATLAB/Simulink
* Familiarity with control systems, CAN communication, and embedded software integration
* Advanced analytical capability with experience working with large and complex data sets
Working Pattern & Travel
