Software Scientist £37,087 to £40,754 per annum (Discretionary range to £46,868), dependent upon skills and experience Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Oxfordshire primarily based onsite / some home working available. Full time / Flexible hours considered. Reference: 11364 About Us Diamond Light Source is one of the worlds most advanced scientific facilities. Were home to the UKs synchrotron light source a giant microscope producing beams of light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. Probing the structure and composition of matter, our work drives innovation in everything from vaccines to nanotech. At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy. About the Role We now have an opportunity for a Software Scientist to contribute directly to the delivery of scientific results in one of the most important areas of research for Diamond, macromolecular crystallography. You will join our data analysis group, a team of scientists and engineers who work closely with beamline staff, support groups and international collaborators to develop world-leading tools and algorithms, as well as the open-source infrastructure which underpins the near real-time delivery of pertinent scientific results to our users. As part of the Diamond-II upgrade, we are building on the success of the XChem programme on the I04-1 beamline by creating a new ultra-high throughput beamline, K04. Rapid feedback from tightly integrated data analysis will be essential to support this. Your role will be to contribute to the development of these data pipelines, working closely with scientists and engineers in other teams to ensure that scientific results will be returned in a timely manner whilst handling the massive increase in data volumes. To deliver this capability you will develop systems to integrate existing and newly developed tools, as well as designing systems to provide results while minimizing wait time and energy usage. About You You will hold a degree-level qualification in science, engineering, mathematics, computer science or equivalent experience, as well as an interest in supporting scientific research coupled with strong analytical and communication skills. Experience in the following areas is essential: Software development in a modern programming language such as Python, C++ and/or Java. Practical experience in a professional, scientific or technical field including support to users. Benefits Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus Christmas closure, public holidays, 2 annual volunteering days and flexible working hours. We also offer an excellent defined benefit pension scheme.
