Ward Sister/Charge Nurse - Acute Medical Unit Ward 1C
Provide leadership, management, and team development as delegated by the Department/Ward Manager, including workload allocation. Contribute to goal setting and benchmarking standards of care. Develop tools to improve service quality and coordinate clinical services across the ward. Manage patient flow, including timely admissions and discharges, to meet national targets where possible. Promote the unit and Trust positively to patients, relatives, and the local community. Maintain knowledge of relevant health policies and their impact on the service. Escalate issues related to care, standards, practice, and patient safety to the Department/Ward Manager or Matron, and develop appropriate actions. Assist in developing and implementing local and trust policies and protocols, ensuring effective application. Manage stock and equipment control, promoting resource efficiency. Represent the team in corporate groups and at regional/national conferences. Foster effective communication within the multidisciplinary team and with external departments. Participate in business planning for service development and improvement. In the absence of the Ward Manager, initiate investigations into incidents, accidents, and complaints, leading investigations as required.
Clinical Management: Provide senior nursing advice, support high-quality, individualized patient care, and manage complex clinical situations, including emergencies. Be competent in using specialized equipment. Act as a clinical role model, ensuring daily management, continuity of care, and high standards of nursing care. Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care programs, integrating evidence-based practices. Promote holistic care considering physiological, psychological, spiritual, socio-economic, and cultural factors. Set and monitor nursing care standards, liaising with medical staff and other disciplines. Ensure care delivery complies with professional practice and conduct codes. Involve patients and relatives in care management and evaluation. Share responsibility for patient care delivery. Maintain safe medication practices, including storage, checking, witnessing, and administration. Pursue relevant clinical training and ensure safe staffing levels, managing clinical risks appropriately.
People Management: Assess and develop staff development plans, participate in orientation, monitor performance, and support revalidation. Motivate staff for personal and professional growth. Deploy staffing resources effectively, support team members, and assist in recruitment and induction. Manage staffing levels and skill mix to meet patient needs. Oversee staff scheduling, leave, sickness, and absence management.
Leadership Development: Foster a learning environment, participate in staff education, and act as a mentor. Contribute to a positive learning climate for colleagues, patients, and visitors. Assess learning needs, develop training programs, and ensure staff professional development and revalidation. Supervise junior nurses, students, and HCAs, maintaining high standards of care. Share specialist knowledge within the Trust and support ward-wide good practice sharing.
Budget Responsibilities: Ensure resource efficiency, manage stock and equipment, and handle patient valuables securely. Approve timesheets for temporary staff as appropriate.
Research and Audit: Develop and implement nursing practice audits, promote research awareness, and apply research findings to practice. Conduct local audits, analyze data, and use findings to improve patient care. Participate in research data collection and analysis as required.
Personal Development: Maintain own professional development, identify training needs, and keep a portfolio for revalidation. Engage in continuous learning and self-improvement.
