The post holder will develop, implement and evaluate a seamless specialist service, ensuring that all AOS/CUP cancer patients within the specialist MDT receive the highest standard of clinical care.
They will act as a lead specialist, demonstrating a high level of expertise and develop the AOS & CUP SpN service, providing specialist advice, education to both patients and staff within primary & secondary care.
The post holder will provide support to patients, their carers/relatives and health care professionals to develop strategies to manage there recovery and early signs of recurrence. The post holder will actively undertake clinical audits and research within the specialist area enhancing service delivery and change.
Successful candidate must have access to a vehicle for work purposes to meet the requirements of the role.
Main duties of the job
The post involves working Monday to Friday across both James Cook and the Friarage sites with the possibility of 7 day working as the service develops further.
The post holder will be given the opportunity to care for patients experiencing complications of their cancer diagnosis, treatment or new presentation for patients with a malignancy of unknown origin in an acute setting. It is a varied role, which will involve working front of house assessing unwell patients, supporting the Triage Bay based in the James Cook University Hospital and covering the AOS Service at the Friarage Hospital.
The post will have the benefit of training and support resources as well as individual training and competency development plans within the cancer directorate.
The post holder will be responsible for contributing to the on-going development of clinical practice, research and standards of care within the service, including development of policies, protocols and guidelines and contribute to service developments in collaboration with multidisciplinary colleagues, to include the undertaking of quality surveillance. The AOS/CUP Specialist Nurse will also ensure the safety and well-being of service users, and always work in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centred care principles.

Knowledge and Skills
Essential criteria
1. Extensive knowledge of current management of patients with cancer/palliative care
2. Ability to prioritise workload achieving a balance between clinical work and other aspects of the role
3. Ability to design and deliver education, training and development
Desirable criteria
4. In depth knowledge of AOS/CUP Cancer speciality
5. Knowledge of national guidance relating to AOS/CUP cancer services, and NHS Cancer Plan
6. Knowledge of current clinical and nursing research related to AOS/CUP cancers
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
7. NMC Level 1 Registration
8. BSc/1st degree (Health Related) or equivalent qualification/ training and experience
9. Post registration experience at masters level in cancer/palliative care or associated speciality.
10. Teaching certificate
11. Chemotherapy competent: Enhancing Practice module (N59 or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
12. Clinical skills qualification or working towards
13. Prescribing qualification or working towards
14. Counselling skills training / Advanced Communication Skills qualification
15. Post registration courses in AOS/CUP Cancer Care
