Job Description
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low, and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Expertise in control systems design and SCADA/telemetry systems would be beneficial.
Working within our Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate, you will influence and shape how we deliver our services into the future. As part of our Technical Authority, you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the whole organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and commitments to net zero carbon.
Responsibilities
* Manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, including our electrical safety rules, for systems and equipment such as HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets like pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures and monitoring sites.
* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on electrical systems and equipment.
* Hold a national incident response role, which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
* Provide specialist technical advice and design to ensure effective, efficient and safe MEICA activity.
* Support the delivery of net zero carbon commitments and safe, reliable assets.
Experience / Skills Required
* Good working knowledge of Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Good working knowledge of control systems, including application of IEC 61508, IEC 62061, BS EN 13489, and telemetry/SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in developing and delivering safe systems of work, risk assessments, and method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including application of Failure Mode Effects Analysis, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing of electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, team working and communication skills.
Additional Requirements
* UK driving licence.
* Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and registered as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working toward registration with a realistic prospect of registration within 12 months.
