About the Role
The world‑leading Time & Frequency department seeks a Senior Network Engineer with hands‑on infrastructure and network design and implementation experience. You will join the team maintaining the UK’s National Time Scale and developing a new resilient Time Scale facility that supports critical national infrastructure and mitigates risks from global navigation satellite systems.
Key Responsibilities
* Design and architect comprehensive network solutions that meet the unique needs of scientific and engineering capabilities, ensuring robustness, scalability, and security.
* Specify, select, and procure networking equipment, ensuring compatibility and integration with existing and future scientific instruments.
* Configure and deploy networking solutions, including routers, switches, firewalls and other devices tailored to each project.
* Apply security best practices and collaborate with security specialists to maintain a high level of protection.
* Execute integration tests, document and analyze results to identify vulnerabilities and improve performance.
* Provide expert‑level troubleshooting for complex network issues, minimizing downtime and ensuring optimal performance of scientific equipment.
* Collaborate with scientific, engineering and IT leadership to align technology solutions with research objectives and mentor junior staff.
* Maintain meticulous records to support quality assurance processes.
* Engage with diverse stakeholders to ensure networking requirements are understood and met.
About You
Essential
* Hands‑on experience installing, testing and integrating network equipment.
* Relevant academic or professional qualifications, or equivalent experience.
* Experience with IT and network infrastructure, management software and security tooling.
* Design and commission of systems aligned with standards and certifications.
* Cyber‑security hygiene practices and technology knowledge.
* Experience with network monitoring software/tools.
* Knowledge of cloud‑native products, virtualisation, containerisation and database technologies.
* Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex technical concepts.
* Team player with a proactive, never‑fail attitude in ambiguous situations.
Highly‑Desirable
* Experience with Microsoft Azure DevOps.
* Agile working practices.
Security Clearance
To work in this role, you must obtain SC clearance with no restrictions, or have the ability to obtain an SC clearance. BPSS clearance is also required.
