Job Summary
The Laboratory Manager position at Curve is essential to the efficient and safe running of Curve's laboratory-based operations. It is a highly diverse and key role that includes elements of health and safety and other areas of regulatory/compliance and equipment maintenance, alongside purchasing of consumables. This role reports to the Chief Financial Operations Officer with accountability also to the VP of Disease Biology.
Health & Safety policy and its implementation within Curve is the overall responsibility of the CEO, supported by the senior management team. The day-to-day responsibility to work safely rests with individual employees and their line managers. Whilst the Laboratory Manager's role is focused on laboratory health and safety, there is significant overlap between lab and non-lab operations. This role will also have elements of facilities management for the office and laboratory.
Key Responsibilities
· Fire Safety
* Arranging a fire risk assessment, implementing actions and carrying out routine testing and all associated equipment testing and training to ensure fire safety and compliance.
· General Health and Safety
* Writing and reviewing the health and safety policy.
* Chair of the health and safety committee.
* Ensuring that there are sufficient first aiders in the laboratory area and that their training is up to date.
* Admin for Citation platform to manage health and safety training and documentation.
* Administrating the iHasco staff training portal and assigning spill kit training, lone worker training, COSHH awareness training etc.
* Restocking Diphoterine products for chemical first aid and keeping stocks in date.
* Arranging annual occupational health surveillance visits with Innovate Healthcare for lab-based scientists.
* Organising staff vaccinations where staff members work involves close proximity with pathogens.
* Organising mobile flu clinic visits with Medicine Clinic.
* Arranging regular testing of gas detection and alarm systems reporting and reviewing near miss and incident report submissions, triaging them and identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.
* Creating a tap flushing rota and managing legionella safety.
* Building and managing the health and safety hub intranet to house all Curve health and safety documentation.
· COSHH & GMO
* Chairing the Biosafety and GMO focus group
* Ensuring relevant laboratory processes are managed in compliance with containment level 2 guidelines.
* Overseeing and monitoring implementation and use of biosafety and biosecurity controls.
* Reviewing and keeping a record of all laboratory COSHH assessments and GMO risk assessments.
· Equipment
* Ensuring that all new laboratory equipment is installed properly, is operating safely and is adequately maintained.
* Monthly anemometer flowrate reading of microbiological safety cabinets.
* Administrator of the SenseAnywhere temperature monitoring and alarm system Arranging regular maintenance visits for lab equipment, in accordance with the supplier's recommended maintenance schedule.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience required
· Thorough knowledge of laboratory health and safety requirements and procedures. Demonstrable experience in laboratory health and safety, risk assessment, COSHH and leadership experience.
· Understanding of health and safety governance and management systems.
· Technical expertise to assess and improve laboratory processes and systems.
MS Office applications (Word, Excel, SharePoint) experience
Proven track record in Laboratory, Operations and Supply chain Management
Great administrative, organisational, communication and interpersonal skills, ability to co-ordinate contractors, staff and lab activities.
Responds positively to intellectual and time challenges
· Excellent problem-solving skills
· Attention to detail
Excellent communication skills, including report writing and verbal presentations of findings.
First Aider, Fire Marshal qualification and preferable Biosafety Officer
· Experience working in containment level 2 laboratories.
Domestic and international shipments of biological and chemical samples, an understanding of border controls and customs is desirable.
Qualifications
Ideally a A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related scientific discipline or relevant qualification.
