Summary

Steel Dynamics are looking for an enthusiastic apprentice to join the team in Blackburn. As an apprentice you will rotate through the business to allow you to build a greater knowledge and wider experience.

Wage

£15,704 for your first year, then could increase depending on your age

National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices

Work

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.


What you'll do at work

* To gain a better understanding of the business, we want to develop a role that revolves through departments, so this will include.
* Sales Estimation. CAD work to aid the sales team to build quotations. Our clients send us CAD files and we create “Parts” that include the cutting type, material Grade, quantity etc
* Nesting & Material Utilisation. We nest for commercial advantage to gain orders, but also for production yield gains.
* Sales Order Input. Checking the accuracy of own work & that of others, so that orders can be processed (after checking by Sales manager)
* Production Office CAD/CAM. Processing Sales Orders to produce cutting programs (Nests) that are output to the machines.
* Stock Management & Control. Production Office CAD/CAM team utilise the stock to obtain best yield and offcut control, tracking.
* Commercial awareness. Training to recognise the commercial balance between time taken to gain best material yield, factory output, stock management, grade awareness. This understanding will aid the individual to make informed decisions to aid daily activities.
* Shop Floor overview. Some shop floor time to see the materials being handled, lifted, identified, cut to size, de-burred and packed. It is good experience to understand the different types of cutting methods and the reason for choosing one over the other.
* Develop spatial awareness of the size & weights of materials.

* Analyse engineering and manufacturing data and information to support technical outputs. For example, read and interpret text, data, engineering drawings, work instructions, method statements, operation manuals.
* Apply scientific, technical or engineering principles.
* Apply problem solving techniques to solutions for identified technical problems.
* Organise, plan and prioritise workflow and scheduling of work with stakeholders.
* Identify, organise and use resources to complete tasks, considering cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
* Produce job specific technical outputs. For example, engineering drawings, quality control management, computer control programming, business improvement, adverse incident reports, technical investigations, equipment appraisals and specifications.
* Provide support and guidance for handover of work to stakeholders. For example, checklists, product or process status, access to supporting documents.
* Record information - paper based or electronic. For example, energy usage, equipment service records, test results, handover documents, checklists.
* Follow standard operating procedures.
* Follow manufacturer's instructions. For example, safe instructions for use of products, processes and machinery.
* Apply quality assurance and control principles and practices. For example, conduct physical checks, take samples, inspections or tests.
* Apply continuous improvement techniques.
* Apply team working principles.
* Communicate in writing with others for example, stakeholders, colleagues, and managers.
* Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
* Use information and digital technology. Comply with GDPR and cyber security regulations and policies.
* Carry out and record learning and development activities.
* Apply equity, diversity and inclusion procedures.

Training schedule

The successful apprentice will enrol on to the L3 Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician apprenticeship at Burnley College.

Day release at Burnley College.


Requirements


Essential qualifications

GCSE in:

* English (grade 4)
* Maths (grade 4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

•An interest in CAD & any form of engineering or material cutting & shaping. Eg, woodworking skills can transfer. •Maths skills and an attention to detail. •Methodical & Process orientated •General Computer literacy. Email, Excel, word, etc. •Communication skills.
