Sage Publishing is seeking an Editor-in-Chief for our HSS Open Access megajournal, Sage Open. Sage Open publishes peer-reviewed, original research and review articles across the social and behavioral sciences and the humanities. The journal evaluates research methods for validity and accepts articles based solely on research quality, promoting interdisciplinary discovery.
The Editor-in-Chief (EiC) will provide strategic, intellectual, and operational leadership, working closely with the editorial board to shape the journal’s direction, uphold standards, and foster a diverse scholarly environment. Responsibilities include overseeing peer review, curating impactful content, and engaging the global social science community.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Define and implement the journal’s editorial vision aligned with open science principles and growth targets.
2. Lead and coordinate associate editors, section editors, and the editorial board; may manage internal staff.
3. Build relationships with authors, reviewers, institutions, and associations; represent the journal at industry events.
4. Solicit high-quality submissions and special issues in emerging social sciences areas.
5. Oversee the peer review process to ensure rigor, fairness, and timeliness.
6. Maintain oversight of editorial decisions and content, ensuring alignment with standards and policies.
7. Monitor publication metrics and uphold the journal’s reputation for excellence.
8. Explore new formats and opportunities to expand the journal program.
9. Promote diversity in authorship, peer review, and editorial practices.
SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
1. Ph.D. or equivalent in a social science discipline.
2. Distinguished scholarship and publication record.
3. Ability to evaluate research across social science subfields.
4. Strong networking skills with academics.
5. Editorial or peer review experience with academic journals.
6. Understanding of the open access publishing landscape.
7. Leadership and organizational skills.
8. Commitment to research integrity, transparency, and open science.
9. Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively internationally.
10. Digital fluency in editorial management systems (e.g., ScholarOne, Editorial Manager).
