MYDoc Trust Doctor Dental Core Trainee equivalent

An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and motivated dentist/doctor to join our department at an exciting time in our Trust's future. The department offers a supportive and encouraging environment for professional development, with opportunities to specialize.

The vacancy is within the Oral & Maxillofacial department for a Trust Doctor equivalent to DCT, starting September 2025, for a maximum of 12 months. The successful applicant will have access to training study days.

The department of Oral & Facial specialties is based at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield. The team includes 4 Consultants in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, 2 outreach OMFS Oncology Consultants, 3 Orthodontic Consultants, 1 part-time Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology Consultant, 6 Specialty Doctors in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, 1 Oral Surgery Specialty Registrar, 1 OMFS Specialty Registrar, 2 part-time Specialty Trainees in Orthodontics, 7 full-time Dental Core Trainees, and 4 part-time Junior Dental Foundation Clinical Trainees.


Main duties of the job

Clinically, these posts will participate in the cross-site junior trainee rota, compliant with the 2016 junior doctor contract, averaging 48 hours/week.

Duties will mainly be based at Pinderfields Hospital, with involvement in delivering care across all sites.

The role enables the post holder to take supervised responsibility for patient care, consolidating skills learned at dental/medical school. As experience grows, responsibilities increase, including clinical decision-making and progressing towards independent practice.

The post also aims to develop core skills and contribute to education and training of the healthcare workforce. By the end of the tenure, the post holder should demonstrate clinical effectiveness, leadership, and decision-making skills essential for career progression.

Job responsibilities

We seek a dynamic and motivated dentist/doctor to join our department at an exciting time. The department offers a supportive environment with opportunities for specialization.

The vacancy is in the Oral & Maxillofacial department for a Trust Doctor equivalent to DCT, starting September 2025, for up to 12 months.

Introduction from Mr. Neil Horisk, Speciality Doctor in OMFS (TPD in DCT)

The department, based at Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield, comprises 4 Consultants in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, 2 outreach OMFS Oncology Consultants, 3 Orthodontic Consultants, 1 part-time Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology Consultant, 6 Specialty Doctors, 1 Oral Surgery ST, 1 OMFS ST, 2 part-time Orthodontic STs, 7 full-time Dental Core Trainees, and 4 part-time Junior Dental Foundation Trainees.

Full-time dental staff gain experience in dento-alveolar surgery, maxillofacial trauma, orthognathic surgery, skin cancer, and oral oncology, along with general maxillofacial surgery. An on-call service operates between Wakefield and Leeds. The appointee will be resident on-call at Pinderfields, working a 1:7 full-shift pattern. Duties include routine and emergency care at Pinderfields, with advice to other hospitals as needed, and supervised clinics and surgeries at peripheral sites.

The Service Role

Participants will join the junior trainee rota, compliant with the 2016 junior doctor contract, averaging 48 hours/week.

Terms & Conditions and Tenure

Employment as a MYDoc Dental Core Trainee under Trust Terms and Conditions, fixed-term for 12 months.

Pay Scale

Equivalent to a doctor on the Core training programme, starting at £52,656 per annum.

Appraisal and Revalidation

Not recognized for training but requires annual revalidation (medical only). Applicants must have a prescribed connection with Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust via GMC Connect, with Dr. Richard Robinson as Responsible Officer.

Continuing Professional Development

Engagement in CPD is required, with time and funding provided per policies. Mandatory training is also part of the program.

Research

Encouraged to develop personal or research interests, liaising with the Trust's R&D department. The Trust supports an expanding research program.

Educational & Clinical Supervision

A designated supervisor will guide the post holder, with regular meetings to ensure development.

Teaching

The Trust values high-quality training, with opportunities for educational leadership and involvement in training doctors, students, and other professionals.

Audit and Clinical Governance

A rolling clinical governance program and audit meetings are in place. Engagement in clinical audit is encouraged and supported by the Clinical Audit Department.


Person Specification


Language Skills

* Proven skills in written and spoken English, demonstrated by:
* IELTS score of at least 6.5 in each domain and overall 7.0 in a single sitting


Empathy and Sensitivity

* Ability to understand others' perspectives and treat them with understanding
* Understanding of patient-centered care


Qualifications

* BDS/MBBS or equivalent dental/medical qualification


Experience

* Sound clinical knowledge and problem investigation skills
* Ability to conduct operative procedures
* Experience with clinical governance, audit, or significant event analysis
* Understanding of clinical research principles and enthusiasm for research participation
* Effective communication skills
* Ability to adapt behavior and language to different situations
* Registration with GDC/GMC, with GDC Number provided
* Current employment in UK Dental Foundation program or exemption, or completion of Dental Foundation training, or current FY1/FY2 medical rotation
* Ability to work in the UK and arrange transport as needed
* Complete employment history and evidence of career progression and achievement
* If previously in DCT, this role may be recognized as an official DCT at the appropriate level.
