Job Scope:
As a Skilled Machinist, you will have diverse abilities to operate manual and CNC machinery with knowledge and experience of various machining operations, including turning, boring, grinding, milling, shaping, and drilling. You will join a large team working across Transmission component machining facilities.
Job Family: Frame Manufacturing Level 3
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING AS A SKILLED MACHINIST
Main activities include:
1. Machine setting and operation
2. Jig setting and tool building
3. Machining with dimensional tolerances of 0.005mm
4. Achieving surface finish tolerances of 0.4 μm
5. Using measuring equipment (e.g., Dial Test Indicators) and recording results
6. Working within operational job card times
7. Following the job priorities list board
8. Pre-kitting for next operations inline
9. Proactively caring for components and applying corrosion preventative measures
10. Completing daily basic checks (operator's maintenance) of machines
11. Handover communication to the next shift's machine operators
Key accountabilities include:
1. Possession of an operator's stamp for traceability confirmation
2. Adherence to quality systems procedures
3. Following controlled documentation and process sketches
4. Working with secured and proven machine programs
5. Interpreting inspection results
6. Participating in scrap & rework investigations to find root causes
7. Following health & safety policies and procedures
Main interfaces include:
1. Liaison with inspectors for 'first off' component qualification
2. Collaboration with process engineers for technical issues
3. Reporting progress and resource needs to supervision
4. Supporting maintenance engineers as required
5. Mentoring apprentices during their training
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
An engineering apprenticeship and NVQ level 3 Mechanical Engineering qualifications as a minimum.
Skills biased towards manual machining.
Familiarity with Siemens / Fanuc machinery control systems, including legacy systems like Siemens Sinumerik System 3.
Ability to work independently and contribute to team efforts.
