Bar Person – Job Description

Tontine Hotel is looking for a friendly, confident, and enthusiastic Bar Person to join our team. Located in the picturesque town of Peebles, The Tontine Hotel combines historic charm with modern comfort—and we're looking for someone who can help elevate their experience from behind the bar.
What You'll Be Doing
* Welcoming guests to the bar with genuine warmth and great conversation
* Preparing and serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks with consistency and care
* Taking bar orders efficiently and ensuring guests enjoy a smooth, enjoyable experience
* Maintaining excellent standards of cleanliness, organisation, and presentation across the bar
* Recommending drinks, offering pairing suggestions, and upselling where appropriate
* Handling payments accurately and confidently
* Monitoring stock levels, assisting with restocking, and supporting cellar or back-bar duties
* Helping during special events with bars and drink service
* Ensuring responsible service of alcohol and supporting a safe, enjoyable environment
What We're Looking For
* A warm, outgoing personality with a natural ability to chat with guests
* Strong communication skills and confidence in a fast‑paced atmosphere
* A positive, can-do attitude with great attention to detail
* Ability to stay calm under pressure and work well as part of a close-knit team
* Previous bar or hospitality experience is beneficial—but enthusiasm and willingness to learn go a long way
* Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including evenings and weekends
* A genuine passion for great service, good drinks, and creating memorable guest experiences
