Job Title: Senior Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine
Grade: ST3+
Specialty/Department: Emergency Medicine
Location: LGI/SJUH
Start Date: ASAP / February 2026
Posts: 2
Leeds Teaching Hospitals offers 12-month Clinical Fellowships designed to provide tailored experience and training to develop a special interest in Emergency Medicine. Fellowship posts are available from ASAP/February 2026 onwards. The post holder will work with a 60/40 clinical to non-clinical time split and there is funding available for attending relevant external courses. Posts are offered on a fixed-term contract for 6 to 12 months in the first instance. The post holder must be GMC registered with a license to practise.
Main duties include delivering care to patients within the Emergency Departments at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and St James University Hospital (SJUH).
The posts are adaptable to suit the candidate's areas of interest. Candidates will be supported to develop new services to support wider emergency needs in Leeds. Leeds Teaching Hospitals is a major trauma center with a history of training emergency medicine specialists and running fellow programmes. The new posts allow tailoring of non-clinical time to develop skills in emergency medicine and build a non-clinical portfolio.
Job responsibilities
This post will allow you to work with a group of consultants with an interest in simulation. Responsibilities include coordinating an embedded weekly in situ simulation programme across both adult departments, including monthly interprofessional trauma team simulations. An interest in human factors and non-technical skills is beneficial.
There will be opportunities to develop skills as simulation faculty through courses such as Introduction to Simulation and debriefing, with ongoing feedback. Opportunities to empower junior and interprofessional colleagues will be available.
Postgraduate Medical Education: You will have dedicated non-clinical time to pursue activities related to postgraduate education, training and supervision. Work with college tutors to maintain a positive learning environment. Involvement may include junior doctor teaching, senior teaching, simulation, induction, FOAM-ed and trainee wellbeing. A study budget is available and support to pursue a Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education or other relevant course.
Undergraduate Medical Education: You will have dedicated non-clinical time for undergraduate education for over 100 senior medical students each year. You will teach, support and mentor students on the shop floor, in classrooms and in simulated environments. Involvement in university summative assessment processes is possible. The fellowship supports development in educational theory, feedback practice, simulation and teaching skills.
Major Trauma: In addition to clinical work at the regional Major Trauma Centre, 40% of the post is dedicated to trauma-based non-clinical activities, including projects such as developing chest drain proformas and trauma education. Attendance at trauma morbidity and mortality meetings is expected, with increasing involvement over time. The trauma fellow may lead trauma simulations and develop as a trauma team leader with simulation involvement.
Ultrasound: Non-clinical time includes development of ultrasound skills and leadership of department and undergraduate ultrasound courses.
Further fellowship areas are welcome and can be discussed during application. Number of posts available will be confirmed at interviews.
