The Maritime Security Officer at Birkenhead Port plays a vital role in protecting passengers, crew, vessels, and port infrastructure. Working as part of the port security team, you will ensure that all security procedures are carried out in line with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, company policies, and statutory requirements. About the role
Responsibilities
* Passenger Screening – Conduct respectful and compliant security searches of passengers, including outer‑clothing checks and the use of approved search techniques.
* Baggage & Property Screening – Operate X‑ray screening equipment and perform manual searches of bags, luggage, and personal items.
* Vehicle Security Checks – Carry out thorough interior and exterior inspections of vehicles prior to boarding, ensuring all checks meet required security standards.
* Access Control – Monitor restricted areas, verify identification, and ensure only authorised persons access secure zones.
* Patrols & Surveillance – Maintain a visible security presence throughout the port, conducting foot patrols and monitoring CCTV where required.
* Incident Response – Identify suspicious behaviour or items, act appropriately, and elevate incidents in line with port procedures.
* Documentation & Reporting – Complete accurate logs, search records, and incident reports to satisfy compliance and audit requirements.
* Customer Interaction – Provide clear, polite communication to passengers, offering reassurance and guidance during the screening process.

Working Pattern
* Split shifts and variable hours aligned to ferry schedules and seasonal demand.
* Early mornings, evenings, weekends, and bank holidays may be required.
* Shifts may change at short notice depending on vessel movements or operational requirements.
* Excellent communication and personal skills.
* Ability to follow procedures precisely and consistently.
* High levels of integrity, reliability, and professionalism.
* Physically able to carry out searching duties and patrols.
* Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
* A valid SIA licence will be required for this role.
Desirable Experience
* Previous security, military, policing, or customer‑facing experience.
* Experience in maritime, aviation, or transport security environments.
* Knowledge of ISPS Code requirements.
