As Head of Actuarial Function (Chief Actuary, GI) at NFU Mutual, you’ll provide expert oversight and challenge for our General Insurance business. You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping strategy, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting our ambitious growth plans in the commercial market. This is a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact, working alongside senior leaders and regulators while developing a high-performing team.About the roleAs the named Chief Actuary for General Insurance, you will: Advise the Board on the adequacy of technical provisions, focusing on methodologies, assumptions, and data quality. Provide independent opinions on underwriting policy and reinsurance arrangements to the Board Risk Committee. Review and enhance reserving methodologies, presenting recommendations to senior committees. Lead the delivery of second line assurance on financial risk, sharing insights and recommendations with key stakeholders. Support the Executive team as a member of the Group Financial Risk and Reserving. Drive short-term projects and strategic initiatives to achieve business objectives. Lead, motivate, and develop a skilled actuarial team, fostering a culture of growth, collaboration, and excellence. Ensure all actuarial work meets professional standards and regulatory requirements. About youWe’re seeking a dynamic and credible actuarial leader who brings: Technical expertise: Fellowship of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (FFA or FIA) and a current Chief Actuary Practising Certificate (or the skills and experience to obtain one). Substantial experience in General Insurance, with a strong track record in underwriting, pricing, and reserving. Deep understanding of UK regulatory requirements, Solvency II, and actuarial modelling techniques. Proven ability to analyse complex data, assess risk, and deliver robust financial reporting. Leadership and personal qualities: Experience influencing at Board level and engaging confidently with senior stakeholders and regulators. Demonstrable success in leading and developing teams to achieve strategic goals. Excellent communication skills, able to translate complex concepts for diverse audiences. Strategic thinker with sound judgement, problem-solving skills, and a hands-on approach. Commitment to fostering an inclusive, empowering, and high-performance culture.
