SHE Compliance Officer – Plymouth, Devon
As a SHE Compliance Officer, you’ll make a meaningful impact every day by helping to protect people, assets, and operations across one of Europe’s largest and most complex naval engineering environments. This role sits at the forefront of safety, health and environmental assurance, supporting teams who deliver essential work that enables the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet to operate safely and effectively.
This is a full‑time role, 35 hours per week, based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.
Responsibilities
* Conduct workplace and desktop audits across the SHE Audit Plan, reviewing documentation, processes, pre‑job briefs, and onsite activity.
* Lead or support scheduled and emergent audits to assess compliance against the SHE Management System and other required standards.
* Prepare high‑quality audit and inspection reports that clearly identify evidence‑based findings and agreed actions.
* Work closely with operational teams to shape and deliver improvement plans that strengthen safety and environmental performance.
* Support a culture of best practice across the site, acting as a trusted advisor to colleagues and stakeholders.
Essential Experience
* Experience working extensively with ISO45001 and ISO14001‑certified Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems.
* Practical SHE Management experience within industrial, engineering, maritime or similar operational environments.
* Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a small team.
* Confident presenting and engaging with internal and external stakeholders across multiple levels.
Qualifications
* Current Auditor qualification or actively working toward it.
* NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental Management Certificate (or equivalent).
* Lead Auditor qualification (or internal audit qualification considered) - Desirable.
* Membership of IOSH, IEMA, CQI, or other relevant professional bodies - Desirable.
Security Clearance
The successful candidate must be a sole UK National who is able to achieve and maintain Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
