An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a passionate multi-disciplinary team of professionals who are involved in the care of babies and children with permanent childhood hearting loss.

The post-holder will be a key member of the multi-disciplinary team for deaf children and their families, working closely with Community Paediatricians, Paediatric Audiologists, the Newborn Hearing Screening team, and Teachers of the Deaf.

The Specialist Nurse will provide essential early intervention and support for families of newly diagnosed deaf babies and children. The nurse will support the Community Paediatricians and the families through the process of medical investigations and diagnoses and will continue to provide support and advocacy for the families going forward.


Main duties of the job

Clinical

* To utilise specialist knowledge of deafness, and its potential impact on child health and development to provide appropriate support to both families and other health professionals.
* To promote integrated working between colleagues working across agencies including health, social care and education services, and families of deaf children.
* Record and document relevant histories and results electronically (using S4H, Systm one and Auditbase patient management systems)
* Take aural impressions and modify earmoulds as required on babies and children
* To provide support to children with both sensorineural and conductive hearing losses and advising on services available to them.

Non-Clinical

* To participate in regular multi-agency meetings with Paediatric audiology team, professionals from education, social care, health visitors, school nurses, and speech and language therapists
* To initiate, co-ordinate and audit programmes for service provision to ensure the delivery of excellent services that are reflective of need.
* Maintain and update protocols to ensure that the service meets national standards and recommended procedures.
* To assist the head of service with the local implementation of national priorities in relation to Paediatrics, audiology and ENT.
* To promote safeguarding of deaf children through awareness of their vulnerability, support and advocacy, and promoting close liaison between agencies.

Qualifications

* Registered Nurse/Professional and hold active registration with relevant Professional body
* Degree level qualification relevant to role
* Post Graduate qualification at Masters level relevant to role to demonstrate specialist clinical and leadership skills
* Evidence of mandatory and statutory essential training skills, for example, Basic Life Support, manual handling, infection control, fire etc
* Managerial or Leadership qualification
* Advanced Clinical Practice modules at Masters level (Physical Assessment, Prescribing)


Experience

* Proven experience in area of specialist knowledge and expertise
* Demonstrate experience of:
o Quality/Service improvement Project Management Leadership People Management Innovative and inspiring leadership and clinical practice Research or audit Education and Training
o NHS experience or relevant health care organisation


Skills

* Leadership skills that demonstrate the ability to manage self and lead others, able to motivate and inspire a team
* Day to day management of a team/service, able to allocate and manage staff organise placements, support learners, provide supervision and line management responsibilities and record keeping. Ability to promote staff wellbeing and manage performance
* Demonstrates knowledge of National NHS and Nursing agenda including national/local performance targets.
* Able to contribute to/interpret policy change and make recommendation for service improvements.
* Expert clinical skills and competence relevant to role to support innovative, evidence based practice.
* Skills to assess and interpret complex needs of patients and able to give expert advice and guidance
* Undertakes audit and research, to critically analyse and interpret data, problem solve and prioritise.
* Digital Skills, use of systems, report writing and presentation skills
* Excellent communication skills and ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive information and provide reassurance and empathy.
* Commitment to own professional and personal development
* Budget and resource management skills
* Able to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all professional groups and senior managers within the organisation and external stakeholders. Maintains confidentiality and information governance principles and is accountable for actions and decision making
* Ability to delegate effectively and hold people to account

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.

£49,387 to £56,515 a yearper annum, pro rata
