Project Engineer
We are looking for a dynamic and capable Project Engineer to assist with design, costing and production management. Our team has been growing for the last few years and has reached a point where we are looking for a suitable candidate to join our team, working directly with key stakeholders and the production team.
This role can be adapted according to the skills and desire of the candidate – we are open to speaking to candidates about their skills and what of the below role would suit their strengths. Not all parts of the role description need to be covered.
About Lydwood
Lydwood was established in 1964 and manufactures wooden components and assemblies. We have 7 large industrial CNC routers and around 80 woodworking machines in total. We are not joiners or carpenters and instead cater primarily to other businesses who require machined wooden components for their business. This ranges from point-of-sale display stands, in melamine-faced chipboard or MDF, to children's furniture in plywood, solid timber components for repeat customers or more involved one-off projects. Hours:
7.30am to 5pm Monday to Thursday, 7.30am to 12.30pm on Fridays.
Full-time in the factory. Paid leave statutory but flexible with paid and unpaid leave.
Key Responsibilities
* Design : designing in 2D/3D CAD packages from scratch, or modifying customer files ready for manufacture, reading of engineering drawings, willing to gain good knowledge of design for manufacture
* Programming: taking 2D or 3D files and programming a range of CNC machines
* Cost estimating: preparing customer quotations. This will involve reviewing customer designs, considering manufacturing methods, proposing design improvements, calculating material & time required using CADCAM software, and costing the job.
* Production workflow: organisation of materials, machines and people to ensure work can flow through the factory, calculating quantities, ordering material/fixings against POs, scheduling production workflow through the factory.
* Manufacturing & production documentation: job specification and quality requirements, understanding of how things are made, communication with production team to seek the relevant information, clearly communicating the process by which the job will be completed to operators through job cards.
* Quality: inspections of components to quality standards set, using of measuring devices to sign off sizing and quality specifications.
* Problem solving: Resolving problems with designs, materials and production as they arise with customers and production, filtering what is raised to management.
* Organisation: Ensuring that jobs, and job sheets, are fully completed and ready on time for dispatch or collection
Desirable skills & experience:
Not all the following skills are required. We are looking for the right fit of candidate and the role can be adapted to candidate preference and skill set. The below is a list of skills which would benefit the candidate in this role.
* Engineering qualifications/experience
* Experience of CNC machining and/or CNC routing
* Experience of design & CAD packages – both 2D and 3D. We work with Alphacam and Fusion 360. Able to read engineering drawings.
* Experience of CNC programming
* Experience of working with timber (not required for the right engineering mindset)
* Experience of hands-on skills to show an understanding of how things work and how things are made.
* Mindset for optimising and efficient manufacturing processes for volume production
* Skilled with MS Office incl. Excel, and keenness to learn new software.
* Personality traits: organised, problem solver, practical, copes well under pressure, motivated and engineering mindset.

No timber experience is required - if skill set can be demonstrated with other production.
