We are seeking an experienced, well-motivated, and suitably qualified Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology to work at Salisbury District Hospital. Working as part of a team, you will contribute to the provision and development of a high-quality diagnostic service. You will support the Senior Biomedical Scientists responsible for the daily organization of the laboratory. You should be highly motivated, a good communicator, and enjoy working as part of a Pathology-wide team.
Rotation throughout the laboratory will be expected, and training will be provided. The core hours are 09:00 - 17:30, with 24/7 coverage via extended hours and an on-call service. Once trained, candidates will participate in extended hours, weekends, bank holidays, and on-call rotas.
Applicants must be HCPC registered and hold an IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
Main duties of the job
1. Use interpretative skills to determine the pathogenic and clinical significance of laboratory test results, including:
* Preparing, examining, and reporting on microscopic examination of specimens.
* Deciding on appropriate tests and procedures to identify pathogenic organisms.
* Performing and interpreting molecular diagnostic tests.
* Referring results for clinical interpretation or opinion.
1. Perform manual, semi-automated, and fully automated laboratory investigations.
2. Take corrective action when quality control or assurance procedures indicate issues with laboratory performance.
3. Ensure first-line troubleshooting of complex analytical equipment or methods.
4. Perform work strictly according to current Standard Operating Procedures.
5. Handle blood, urine, feces, organs, other tissues, and hazardous materials safely.
6. Participate in the introduction of new equipment or methods.
7. Supervise and monitor the performance of Medical Laboratory Assistants, Associate Practitioners, and trainees/students.
8. Participate in maintaining and developing the quality system.
9. Comply with good work practices according to UKAS Accreditation standards and relevant legislation.
10. Work flexibly according to service needs, including shift rotations.

Person Specification
Education, Qualifications and Training (Essential):
* BSc Hons Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
* Registration with HCPC
* IBMS Specialist Diploma in Microbiology
Desirable:
* MSC
Experience (Essential):
* Two years post-registration experience in an HCPC-approved diagnostic microbiology laboratory
* Knowledge of laboratory information and management computer systems
* Knowledge of safety procedures
* Ability to use, control, and maintain analytical equipment
* Ability to train/support less qualified/experienced staff
Desirable:
* Experience with internal and external QA
Knowledge and skills (Essential):
* Advanced microbiology techniques
* Ability to work alone or in a team
* Good interpersonal skills
Other job-related requirements (Essential):
* Able to work Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays
