Astutes Power Team are working with a leading independent power producer who own and operate several assets across the UK. They operate a Gas Fired Power Station in Runcorn, capable of producing over 800MW through gas and steam turbine technology. We are looking for a Health, Safety, Security and Environmental professional to join the power station. As the HSSE officer you'll be the subject matter expert on site for all issues. You'll be responsible for creating a safer working environment, leading audits and investigations, delivering training and managing contractors. Responsibilities and duties of the HSSE Officer role: Reporting directly to the Plant Manager as a HSSE Officer, you will be responsible for:
Ensuring adherence to HSSE management systems, policies, and site-specific rules
Leading and supporting emergency preparedness activities, including drills and exercises
Contributing to internal communications, performance metrics (KPIs), and implementation of site-level HSSE strategy
Promoting strong HSSE culture through coaching, engagement, and meaningful safety conversations
Assisting with incident investigations, learning reviews, and tracking corrective actions
Monitoring HSSE performance, identifying trends, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives
Supporting routine reporting, emergency exercises, audits, and interactions with regulatory bodies
Assisting in outage planning, training coordination, and ensuring site-wide regulatory compliance
Working closely with the Regional HSSE Manager on cross-site and strategic safety initiatives
Professional qualifications
We are looking for someone with the following:
Ideally qualified with a minimum NEBOSH Diploma in Health and Safety Management or equivalent
Degree in a relevant Safety field would be advantageous
Personal skills
The HSSE Officer role would suit someone who has:
Familiar with the Power Generation process or similar industry such as Incineration (Waste to Energy), Petrochemical, COMAH, Refinery, Papermills etc
Acted as lead auditor for accidents and investigations
Familiar with Rooy Cause Analysis and Continuous Improvement tools
