My client, a Bristol-based multi-disciplinary building services consultancy, is looking for an Intermediate Mechanical Design Engineer to join their growing design team. This is a great opportunity for someone with a solid foundation in mechanical building services design to step into a well-rounded, client-facing consultancy role one that goes far beyond traditional design.
Their approach blends technical engineering, cost planning, commercial support, and project management with a strong focus on operational performance and energy efficiency often working closely with both specialist contractors and end-user clients under the BSRIA Soft Landings Framework.
If you're looking to be part of a team where your engineering input is valued at every stage from concept design to commissioning and handover this could be your next move.
What You'll Be Doing
* Delivering mechanical building services designs (HVAC, public health, LTHW/CHW, etc.) across sectors such as commercial, education, healthcare and residential
* Producing detailed calculations, specifications, and coordinated drawings using tools like Hevacomp, AutoCAD, IES, and Revit
* Supporting cost planning and helping define scopes of work for tenders or fixed-fee projects
* Contributing to project delivery beyond design including commissioning support and client advice during handover
* Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, project managers and commercial staff
* Attending meetings, site visits, and supporting the director-led approach to client relationships
* Supporting junior engineers and engaging in CPD as part of your career progression
What They're Looking For
You'll likely have 3-5 years of experience in mechanical building services and be looking to step into a more rounded, consultancy-led role.
Essentials
* A degree or HND/HNC in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering
* Hands-on experience with mechanical building services design (UK projects)
* Solid working knowledge of relevant regulations (Part L, CIBSE guides, British Standards)
* Experience with design software: Hevacomp, AutoCAD, and ideally Revit or IES
* Ability to produce clear, accurate reports, calculations and specifications
* Good communication skills and the confidence to work with clients, architects and contractors
* A proactive mindset with a focus on buildability, performance and client outcomes
Nice to Have
* Experience working under the BSRIA Soft Landings Framework
* Involvement in commissioning and post-occupancy evaluation
* Understanding of energy performance and low-carbon technologies
* Familiarity with commercial/project management support
* Progress toward Chartership with CIBSE or IMechE
Why This Role?
* Be part of a tight-knit, technically strong consultancy team
* Exposure to the full project lifecycle, not just design
* Regular collaboration with directors and clients – no silos
* Excellent career development potential and CPD support
* Work on projects that matter, from concept through to completion and operation
* Competitive salary and benefits package, tailored to experience
If you're looking for a role that combines technical design with real-world project impact, and you're keen to grow in a collaborative consultancy environment – this one's worth a conversation.
