This role is open to all applicants. However, in line with Cornwall First recruitment principles, initial shortlisting will prioritise applicants from Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, and the Integrated Care Board for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

The Deputy Head of Midwifery, in close collaboration with other health professionals, will ensure Women and Childrens services run effectively, efficiently, and delivers best practice for all patients with the clear vision to reduce health inequalities, improve outcomes, ensure safe care and provide on-going and sustainable support to all patients who attend hospital across the Maternity and Neonatal Service.

The Deputy Head of Midwifery will lead clinical staff within Maternity Services, including any specialist Midwifery teams within that speciality.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day running of the services within the Women and Childrens Division as well as taking a lead on inpatient flow within the division both operationally, clinically and managerially

The post holder will provide a highly visible, accessible, and authoritative presence in the clinical areas of Women and Childrens and all areas and roles that fall under the specialty.


Main duties of the job

As part of the multi-disciplinary team, the post-holder, at times, will be required to fulfil clinical shifts within the clinical areas. In extremes they will need to be able to coordinate a shift in the absence of a competent Midwife in Charge or during times of operational pressures. Anticipate and effectively respond to barriers to communication, ensuring patients, families and carers are kept fully informed and consent to treatment and care plans are maintained. Act as a resource for staff advising on local, Trust and national policy, procedures and guidelines ensuring patient safety and clinical governance is maintained. Understand and apply the legal safeguarding framework that supports the identification of vulnerable and abused adults and be aware of statutory vulnerable patients' health procedures and Trust guidance. Ensure all appropriate referrals are completed if required.
