Psychiatry Resident Doctor Post

Position details
We are looking for a resident doctor for 3 days per week (Monday to Wednesday) working 9 am to 5 pm at Barking Hospital. No on-call shifts are included in this role.
Team and supervision
* The post-holder will be supervised by Dr Alex Olaye, Consultant Psychiatrist (clinical supervisor & line manager) and Dr Basit Hussain, Consultant Psychiatrist.
* The trainee shares office space with other Core-trainees to facilitate networking and exam practice as necessary.
* The team manager is the operational lead for the service and line manages non-medical staff (secretarial & administrative).
* The team includes CPNs of varying seniority, social workers (including AMPHs), one senior OT, StR (Support & Recovery time workers) and administrative staff.
Responsibilities and clinical duties
* Discuss patient-related issues with the team; prescribe medication and arrange blood tests where appropriate; participate in regular joint assessments/reviews of patients.
* Maintain high standards of professionalism and uphold patient and carer respect, dignity and confidentiality at all times.
* Attend to the multidisciplinary team in a friendly, supportive community setting; gain experience in assessing and managing chronic complex mental disorder and associated comorbidities and risks.
* Work as part of the multidisciplinary team (including community psychiatric nurses, social workers and occupational therapists).
* Adopt a recovery-focused approach with the aim of enabling long-term mental health patients to achieve the best possible quality of life and independence from psychiatric services where possible.
* Learn about and participate in complex medical treatment (e.g., treatment of resistant illness, depot management, Clozapine and Lithium) and contribute to psychological and social aspects of treatment for patients and carers.
* Weekly zoning meetings to grade risk; opportunities to attend multi-professional meetings for high-risk cases; regular joint home assessments and CPA assessments; a weekly physical health clinic led by the trainee.
* Comply with the Psychiatry Specialty Curriculum structure (as approved by PMETB, 2006) and GMC Good Medical Practice guidelines as applicable to the post.
Clinical duties (clinic structure)
* You will conduct 2 follow-up clinics per week and 1 new patient assessment clinic; most sessions will align with Dr Alex Olaye’s clinic times. You will see patients with diagnoses such as Bipolar Affective Disorder, Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective disorder, Treatment-resistant Depression/Anxiety, Complex Personality Disorder, etc.
* Your medical secretary will arrange appointment times; liaise with care-coordinators to arrange home visits and update RIO-diary accordingly.
* Training in communication and interview skills will be tailored to the post holder’s needs.
* Maintain accurate, legible, contemporaneous clinical records for all patients under care.
