Opportunity for a freelance artist interested in play, participatory work and creating with/for autistic young people. This role is for someone who identifies as autistic, regardless of diagnosis.
Function Schmunction is all about celebrating and creating opportunities for authentic autistic play, joy and connection. The project seeks to include autistic individuals and their communities of all ages, life experiences, interests and needs.
The project began in 2022, devised and led by autistic artist and playworker Max Alexander in collaboration with/produced by Independent Arts Projects. It is continuing in 2025, including a series of sessions at a Glasgow ASN school during September to December.
We aim to work with an artist who has an interest in play, participatory work and creating with and for autistic audiences. The artist will bring their own creative practice, skills and interests to the project. The role is open to artists from any creative discipline, this might be visual art, dance, music, sculpture, design, facilitation, something else or a combination. The key qualities we are looking for are curiosity, responsiveness and ability to pay deep attention to participants in collaboration and play.
The artist should have experience working collaboratively with individuals who are disabled and/or autistic and/or neurodivergent. The role will be shaped according to the artist’s level of experience with flexibility around how they work with Max Alexander as the Lead Artist.
We are looking for an autistic or autistic-adjacent person for this role. For us this means someone who considers themselves to be autistic (regardless of diagnosis etc.) or someone who is neurodivergent in a way that means they feel a strong affinity with autistic ways of being.
This role is for24 days of work between 19 August and 17 December 2025. This includes:
- 1 shadowing day at North Edinburgh Arts (EH4 4AB) during August.
- Collaboration, planning & reflection, taking place between the Lead Artist’s studio in central Glasgow & from the Collaborating Artist’s home or preferred location.
- Session delivery at East Park School in Maryhill, Glasgow (G20 9TD).
Please see the job pack for full details on dates and working days.
The fee is£6,000 in total (24 days at £250 per day) including holiday pay.
