Role Description

As the Unreal Engine Programmer on Morag’s Birthday Party, you will play a key role in bringing the game’s core systems and moment-to-moment gameplay to life.

You’ll work closely with the Game Director to translate design ideas into interactive experiences, shaping how players explore, interact, and navigate the world. The project is a stylised 3D narrative horror game, blending environmental storytelling, puzzle-solving, and cinematic atmosphere.

This role focuses on building the foundational gameplay systems that define the player experience — from movement and camera to interaction and progression.

You’ll be encouraged to take ownership of systems, suggest improvements, and help define technical workflows as the project grows.

Responsibilities
* Implement core gameplay systems in Unreal Engine 5, including:
* Character movement (3D exploration)
* Cinematic / fixed camera system (Little Nightmares–inspired)
* Interaction system (objects, environment, triggers)
* Inventory system (basic)
* Puzzle logic and progression systems
* Door / unlocking systems
* Prototype and iterate quickly using Blueprints (C++ optional)
* Collaborate with design and art teams to bring concepts into gameplay
* Help establish scalable systems that will support full production
* Contribute to technical decision-making and workflow improvements

What We’re Looking For
* Experience with Unreal Engine 5
* Strong understanding of Blueprint scripting
* Ability to build and structure gameplay systems independently
* A portfolio or examples of Unreal projects (student, personal, or professional)
* Comfortable working remotely within a small indie team
* Strong communication and problem-solving skills

Desirable Skills
* Knowledge of C++ in Unreal
* Experience working on:
* Narrative-driven or atmospheric games
* Puzzle systems or interaction-heavy gameplay
* Understanding of:
* Camera design for cinematic gameplay
* Player feel and responsiveness
* Familiarity with version control (Git / Perforce)

Why Join Us?
* Be part of a unique, stylised horror project with a strong creative vision
* Work closely with the Game Director to shape core gameplay systems
* Have a direct impact on the feel and structure of the game
* Flexible working hours (~20 hrs/week)
* Opportunity for revenue share upon release and a potential paid position once funding is secured
