Wärtsila is looking for an experienced Materials Engineer / Technologist to join the Havant R&D team for Wartsila Defence Solutions Ltd.
Wärtsilä is a global leader in advanced technologies and complete lifecycle solutions for the marine and energy markets. By emphasising sustainable innovation and total efficiency, Wärtsilä maximises the environmental and economic performance of the vessels and energy solutions of its customers.
As a part of the materials R&D team, this role will focus on developing the materials science and processing capability of the business to support broader product‑development objectives. This will encompass a broad spectrum of materials, including metals, polymer composites, metals, ceramics and elastomers, along with their associated manufacturing process technologies.
The person fulfilling this role will have the capacity to influence future product and manufacturing strategies of the Company and develop into the role of subject‑matter expert, leading to progression into a more senior role.
This will require the delivery of a high standard of written and spoken communication at all levels across the Company and externally.
Responsibilities
1. Maintain technical credibility and become a recognised subject‑matter expert.
2. Operate and maintain a diverse range of test equipment.
3. Be a motivated and well‑organised self‑starter with a clear focus on achieving results.
4. Demonstrate strong team‑working skills, including planning and target setting.
5. Exhibit excellent communication skills in English for both internal and external audiences.
6. Additional language skills would be advantageous.
7. Willing to do some occasional domestic travel.
Requirements
* Minimum qualification is a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, engineering science or materials science, with experience working in polymer composites, metallurgy and ceramics technology.
* Some experience running laboratory equipment would be beneficial, although in‑house training would be provided.
* Proven and demonstrable experience in a materials development or industrial research environment, with evidence of successfully advancing technology projects through an established technology readiness process, is essential.
