You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. This is a critical part of the work we do — the daily upkeep of the rail network.
As a technician, you’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our technician community comes from diverse backgrounds, and this might be your first consideration of a career in rail. We focus on your transferable skills and behaviours; if you can demonstrate these, we will provide all necessary training to work safely and competently on the network.
About the role (External)
Our technicians serve as the essential link between the team leader and operatives, specializing in various disciplines. For this role, you’ll become a specialist in Off track: responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing land alongside the track network to ensure safety and efficiency. This includes vegetation management, drainage, and ancillary structures.
Technicians work outdoors in all conditions, throughout the year, day or night. The role involves demanding manual work, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Being safety-focused, rule-respecting, and a team player is critical, especially when working near moving trains at high speeds.
You matter to your team
You should be a natural team player, capable of leading when asked by the team leader. Use your skills to deliver work safely, ensuring the team has the right competencies to meet safety standards. Be a role model for safe working behaviors and confident in challenging potential safety risks to ensure everyone returns home safely each day. Today's technicians can advance to become tomorrow’s team leaders.
Our technicians are vital to our maintenance teams. You don’t necessarily need rail experience but must demonstrate how your transferable skills meet the following criteria:
·Leadership – Ability to lead, motivate, and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
·Effective communicator – Strong skills to deliver clear instructions to the team and colleagues.
·Technical skills – Knowledge and experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques relevant to the discipline.
·Safety – Role model safe behaviors, implement safe systems of work, and challenge unsafe situations.
·Problem solver – Persistent in finding safe, effective solutions; committed to developing relevant skills and staying updated with standards, procedures, and instructions.
·Willingness to learn – Continuous development of skills and staying current with standards and procedures.
·Relevant qualification – Ideally hold an NVQ Level 1 or 2 related to the discipline or equivalent experience.
It matters that this is the right role for you
Additional considerations include:
·Shifts – Includes days, nights, and weekends.
·Outdoor work – Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
·Safe working – Employment is subject to drug and alcohol testing, medical assessments, and BPSS checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
·Driving – Must hold a category B driving license to operate Network Rail vehicles.
·Commute – Reside within a 60-minute commute of the location.
You matter to us
