About the Department
The European Ceramics Department is the international market leader. We are a dynamic team hosting four dedicated and joint sales a year in London and Paris, in addition to single-owner sales. We conduct valuations and private sales for private collectors and institutions around the world. You will work in an international team, based with three specialist business-getters and a department administrator in London, travelling frequently to Paris and liaising with our colleagues within the CLASSICS team in Paris and London alike.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
In your role as Specialist, you will be required to carry out the following:
1. Appraisal and valuation of property in the office and on location in Europe and UK predominantly
2. Develop business-getting strategies with Senior SpecialistsRegular travel to our European offices and clients for valuations
3. Research and catalogue works coming up for sale, including academic footnotes and detailed condition reports
4. Work with the team on proposal documents and pitches for business.
5. Assist with organising catalogue photography, layout and design to ensure timely delivery
6. Liaise with the marketing department to promote the business-getting and sales activities of the department
7. Assist the team with organising exhibitions and events worldwide
8. Maintain and support the ongoing development of a departmental database of customers and maintain contact with established clients to encourage further business with the company
9. Maintain an awareness of our competitors’ strategies to maintain the competitive position of this department in the market
Key Skills & Attributes
10. Demonstrable interest in European Ceramics of the th-th centuries
11. Proven business acumen and valuation skills
12. Excellent research skills, thoroughness, and ability to write to a scholarly standard
13. Good market and trend awareness
14. Additional second and/or third language preferred (French/Italian/German)
15. A good level of specialist expertise achieved through a previous role
16. Functional working knowledge of the whole auction process and related procedures
17. Flexible and receptive to change
18. Excellent time management, attention to detail and organisation skills
19. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral
20. Able to work as part of team, and independently
