Features Editor — National Geographic Traveller (UK), (MAT Leave Cover)
APL Media, based in Kentish Town, seeks a talented, enthusiastic features editor, keen to work across print and online with the award-winning team at National Geographic Traveller (UK).
The features editor has the responsibility of supporting the editorial team in developing, managing and executing the editorial vision of National Geographic Traveller (UK), in line with the wider brand strategy. Working across print and online, the ideal candidate will be able to deliver compelling, constantly evolving content across all platforms.
This includes commissioning and editing features and sections across the print magazine and the website, acting as a key liaison with the brand’s digital team, and adapting print features for the website, nationalgeographic.com/travel
Role:
* Assisting the senior editors, managing editor and deputy editor
* Delivering consistent editorial excellence in print and online • Identifying, championing and responding to the needs of our audience
* Discovering and nurturing high-quality content producers across all disciplines and platforms
* Liaising with the subbing, design, production and sales departments
* Understanding the competitive landscape and continuously monitoring all relevant media
* Investigating and developing existing and new content ideas
* Being an advocate for National Geographic Traveller (UK) internally and externally, and representing the brand at events in the UK and overseas
* Ensuring production deadlines are met in accordance with agreed schedules and that expenditure is within agreed budgets
* Excellent written communication skills and proven feature writing experience
* Passion for upholding the style and standards of the National Geographic Traveller (UK) brand
* An in-depth knowledge and enthusiasm for travel media and a strong contact book
* Experience commissioning and working with freelance writers
* Aptitude for building and maintaining working relationships with tourism brands and travel PRs
* Managing a content calendar, commissioning on‑brand and on‑trend features for the year ahead
* Strong time management skills. Able to organise a team and resources to meet deadlines
* Ability to prioritise workload across several projects and varied levels of activities. Using initiative to step in where necessary, and judgement to manage and deploy available resources to best effect
* Contributing to digital activities — using CMS to upload and edit content, having knowledge of SEO techniques and an interest in digital marketing
* Identifying new opportunities and approaches. Championing new ideas and initiatives
* Creating a vibrant, engaging culture for the team. Encouraging calculated risk‑taking and seeking different perspectives that challenge the status quo, while also assessing how ideas will work pragmatically
* Having a genuine interest in the wider work and mission of APL Media, caring about our brands and the development of the people who work here
* Public speaking. Representing the brand at events, panel talks and conferences, in the UK and overseas
Key responsibilities:
* Commissioning and editing cover stories
* Editing supplements where required
* Writing and adapting copy across print and digital alongside the digital team
* Attending meetings with National Geographic where required
* Liaising with design on layout amends
* Managing the assistant editor and assisting their development
* Ensuring the budget sheet is filled in and invoices are filed correctly
* Liaising with the picture editor for feature shoots
* Creating and contributing original online content
* Digital headlines
* Signing off newspaper inserts / supplements across the wider APL Media portfolio
