PURPOSE OF THE POST:
The Finance Director will provide strategic financial leadership, oversee the charity's financial health, and support the CEO and Board of Trustees in sound financial decision-making. A key part of this role will be to manage a crucial transition period and help shape the future structure and capability of the finance function — particularly in anticipation of the planned retirement of our long-standing Finance Manager in 2027.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Strategic Financial Leadership

Advise the CEO and Board on financial strategy, sustainability, and risk.
· Contribute to long-term planning and scenario modelling to support growth and resilience.
· Drive improvements in financial systems and reporting.
**Budgeting and Planning
·**
Lead the annual budgeting process across departments.
· Monitor performance through management accounts and forecasting.
· Ensure alignment of budgets with strategic priorities and funding streams.
**Fundraising Collaboration
·
Work closely with the Head of Fundraising & Finance Manager to:
o**
Identify financial needs and opportunities for funding.
o Cost new project proposals and funding bids.
o Track and report on restricted and unrestricted funds.
· Support the CEO in preparing for leadership succession in the finance team, contributing to income strategy and continuity planning.
**Transition & Team Development
·**
Oversee and support the finance and fundraising interface during a time of change.
· Help shape the future structure and skills of the finance team to ensure long-term capacity.
· Play a key role in succession planning and ensuring a smooth transition leading up to and beyond the retirement of the current Finance Manager in 2027.
**Governance and Compliance
·**
Ensure compliance with financial regulations and charity law (Charity Commission, HMRC, SORP, Companies House).
· Maintain internal controls and risk management systems.
· Lead on the preparation of statutory accounts and liaise with external auditors.
**Internal Collaboration
·**
Line-manage or oversee the work of a finance officer, bookkeeper, or outsourced provider.
· Provide clear financial insight to non-financial staff, the senior leadership team, and trustees.
· Support and attend board meetings, working closely with the Finance Subcommittee.
**Health and Safety

To work in accordance with health and safety legislation ensuring you are aware of your personal responsibility for health and safety.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
:
· Fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
· Strong experience in a senior financial role in the charity or non-profit sector.
· Deep understanding of charity finance, budgeting, and fund accounting.
· Excellent communication skills and ability to support teams during periods of change.
· Strategic thinker with hands-on skills and a collaborative, supportive approach.
Desirable
:
· Experience in the mental health or health & social care sector.
· Knowledge of charity fundraising models and income diversification.
· Experience in team restructuring or succession planning.
