The Civil Engineering team works on designing and delivering resilient infrastructure within the site development and water sectors. From flood risk and drainage design, to engineering construction and utilities, we combine technical expertise and creativity to solve complex challenges and shape a built environment that supports communities and a low carbon future.
The Opportunity
You will join a team of engineers, scientists and other professionals in our Energy, Water and Resources Team to assess, design and supervise civil engineering works across a wide range of projects, including water, energy, site development, highways and rail. The projects vary from local to national scale and involve work from initial concept through to detailed design and construction for both public and private sector clients.
Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities (6‑12 week internship)
* Carry out assessment, analysis and design, producing design reports, drawings, calculations and specifications.
* Collaborate with Arup colleagues in other disciplines.
* Work with landscape architects, environmental and ecological specialists, geotechnical and geomorphology experts, and more.
* Meet with clients, national agencies, local authorities and other stakeholders, including site visits.
* Specify and analyse survey information and constraints for solution development.
* Develop and appraise options, supporting the production of engineering solutions and business cases.
* Undertake feasibility studies, preparing engineering sketches and technical reports.
* Create digital solutions to manipulate, analyse and report on large and complex datasets.
* Use specialist analysis and design software such as Infodrainage, GIS, AutoCAD/Civil 3D/Bentley MicroStation, ProjectWise, Navisworks, Flood Modeller, Tuflow, InfoWorks.
Eligibility & Qualifications
* Working towards a BSc/MSc degree in Civil Engineering or a related Engineering discipline, expecting a 2:1 or above.
* Looking to develop a career in Engineering with a view to obtaining Professional Accreditation.
* Willingness to learn new skills and a desire to deliver high‑quality work for a range of clients.
* A good communicator who thrives on working either independently or in a team environment.
