Head of Professional Practice & Development

The post holder will be a clinically active academic with a fulllicense to practise with the General Medical Council (GMC), they will have oversight of the professional development and supportof students and school campus andplacement) ensuring the GMCs professional values and behaviours are adheredto.

StudentDevelopment and Support: Working with the SoMSenior Leadership Team and professional service leads, the role of the Head of Professional Practice &Development will have responsibilityfor ensuring the longitudinal integration of Professional values and behaviours(PVB) throughout the MBBS programme. The post holder will manage thedevelopment, content and delivery of teaching and assessment of PVB contentthrough both Phase 1 and 2 of the MBBS programme. They will also work with relevant SoM Leadswhere student disciplinary issues arise or students' fitness to practise iscalled into question.

School Development andSupport: In addition to the supporting students,the post holder will also assist the Head of Partnerships & ExternalEngagement where professionalism or performance issues may arise with the placement providers. They will work with relevant leads(such as the Headof Primary & Community Care) to design training materials/courses foreducators in the SoM and in placement providers.


Main duties of the job

Aligning PVB content to the studentsintended learning outcomes ineach year

Work collaboratively with the Phase Leads, the Head of Assessment and Module Leadsto support with the development of assessments relating to PVB

Constantly reviewPVB activity and drive forwardimprovements to the design, delivery and assessment in collaborationwith relevant leads

Work with the SoM Senior Leadership Team for any cases relatedto student conduct/professionalism

Work alongside the Head of Partnerships & External Engagement to support the continuing professional development ofcampus and placement-based school.

Provide clinical support where professionalism/performance issues may arisewith clinical tutors onplacement.

Job responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Head of Professional Practice& Development:

Lead and manage PVB throughout the MBBS programme, working in close partnershipwith Phase and Module Leads.

Responsibility for the designand content of PVB teaching, ensuring it remainsrelevant, engaging, deliverable with available resources, and aligned to the intended learning outcomes.

Work closely with Module Leads to ensure that the PVB content is appropriately woven intomodules.

Oversee the delivery of PVB,ensuring that it is timetabled appropriately,according to availableresource and in accordance with published deadlines.

Ensure recruitment and qualitymonitoring of suitableteaching staff, workingwithin resource constraints.

Develop new and innovative teaching sessions, ensuringthat they are designed, maintained, updated and delivered to ahigh standard with due regard for resourcing and timetabling constraints.

Work with Phase Leads and theClinical & Professional PracticeModule to lead the preparation and delivery of assessments for PVB as set out in the programmespecification.

Assessment setting,marking and feedbackmust be completed in accordance with Universityregulations and policy, working with the Head of Assessment to agreedtimescales.

Provide management reportson teaching, learningand assessment activities as required.

Work with the Phase Leads toreview and address feedback related to PVB from all sources, e.g. students, internaland external examiners, and assessment results.

Liaise with the Director of UndergraduateMedicine and Phase Leads over issues arising in relation to student conduct/professionalism and Fitness to Practise concerns

Actively engage with the SoMgovernance structures and Chair the Health and Conduct sub-Committee.

Design and develop a suite of training and development resources and courses for campusand placement based clinical educators, including obtaining educationalaccreditation for such where appropriate

Work with Head of Partnerships &External Engagement to develop systemsand process for thereward and recognition of educators both on campusand for placement-based educators

Provide clinical support where professionalism/performance issues may arise with campus and placement-based educators, including liaison with regulatory bodies such as the GMC

Contribute to the SoM achieving academicobjectives through teaching,research, and incomegenerating activities.

Academic Duties:

Where the postholder may have capacity, they will:

Develop curriculum materials and resources for the modulesand contribute to the creationof formative and summative written assessments relatedto PVB

Engage in development activitywithin the curriculum to ensure contentis current and innovative.

Assist with SBA/OSCEstation writing, OSCE examining, and invigilation as required.

Represent the School and University on appropriate externalcommittees and boards toensure appropriate representation of views.

Develop excellent relationships with external stakeholders to ensure appropriate high-quality teaching and learning including placementopportunities for students.

Work closely with othermembers of the SoM, ensuringcross-school working andcollaboration, and work in partnership with professional services staffsupporting the programme.

Engage in continuing professional development to ensure adequate skillsand knowledge to carry out the role.

Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements in all aspectsof work.

Undertake such specific roles and management functions within the School and Universityas may be required by the line manager or such other person to whomresponsibility may have been delegated

Undertake any other dutiesrelevant to the Schools activities and commensurate with the level of the post, as directedby the Director of Undergraduate Medicine or Executive Dean of School.

OngoingClinical Commitment

Giventhat the purpose of the Associate Professor/Professor role is to enableindividuals to embed contemporary clinical practice in teaching and thecurriculum more generally, it is a fundamental condition of your employmentthat you remain employed in a clinical role within the National Health Service(NHS).

TheUniversity defines this as:

Maintainingfull registration with the GMC and on the specialist or GP register. (You areadvised to continue membership of one of the medicaldefence organisations.)

Holda consultant or equivalent level employment contract with a GP Practice/anNHS Trust.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* Fully registered and of good standing with the General Medical Council
* Licence to practise in the UK and member of the specialist/GP register
* Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training (CCT)
* Professional accreditation as appropriate, including up to date annual clinical appraisal
* Extensive clinical experience and an ability to transfer clinical knowledge to the academic environment
* A senior clinician with a proven record of leadership, innovation and managing change in medical education
* Extensive knowledge and experience of teaching, learning and assessment in undergraduate/postgraduate medical education particularly in the area of professional values and behaviours, conduct and performance
* Asoundunderstandingofemergingtrendsintheareaof professionalism within Medical Education (national and international)
* Knowledge of quality assurance processes in medical education
* Experience of developing training and resources for clinical educators
* Understanding and experience of the regulatory processes and requirements of performance and fitness to practise concerns in learners and educators
* Leadership: ability to create a culture of excellence, collaboration and respect, underpinned by strongly held values.
* Planning and organisation: ability to manage conflicting demands and meet deadlines in a complex and changing environment
* Interpersonal skills: ability to relate to others with tact and diplomacy
* Analytical and creative thinking: ability to conceptualise and analyse problems and to synthesise complex sets of information and ideas
