Qualifications
Applicants must have full GMC Registration, a license to practise, and be eligible for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register. Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within six months of confirmed entry from the date of interview. Doctors on the Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR – Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) route are only eligible to apply for a substantive consultant post once this has been awarded. Non‑UK applicants must demonstrate equivalent training.
Post Details
This is a 1‑year fixed‑term, full‑time (40 hours per week) post based in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary Hospital. The post supports the General Surgery Directorate and includes emergency duties and elective sessions at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh (RIE). Outreach elective general surgical sessions may occur at other hospitals in Lothian and are shared with upper gastrointestinal (UGI) colleagues. The post is part of a 1 in 17 on‑call Emergency Team rota providing 24/7 elective and emergency general and UGI services to the population of Lothian.
The elective commitment involves a team providing specialist upper GI services such as benign oesophago‑gastric surgery, benign biliary surgery, bariatric surgery, complex hernia surgery, and endocrine surgery, contributing to the overall general surgery workload. Potential involvement in other services—trauma, benign upper GI, or complex hernia surgery—may arise after discussion.
