About the role
We’re hiring a practical, service-led VP of Legal who keeps velocity high and risk low, builds simple systems that scale, and partners with engineers and researchers. You will make Legal AI-first through automated workflows, training, and clear guardrails, so teams can ship fast without avoidable risk or bureaucracy.
Apply if you
* Align legal strategy tightly to mission and business outcomes
* Are pragmatic, data-driven, and human-first
* Use AI daily and can coach team-wide adoption (intake, redlines, issue-spotting, knowledge)
* Set healthy boundaries with leadership and the org
* Preserve innovation while upholding standards and law
* Handle investigations, regulatory queries, and disputes with sound judgment
* Communicate clearly and directly, in writing and live
* Sweat the details and run compliant, audit-ready operations
What you’ve done
* 12+ years PQE (in-house + top firm mix), including start-up and scale-up experience
* Built legal functions for deep-tech/AI and crypto/web3 businesses; trusted by engineers and researchers
* Shipped legal systems with artifacts and measurable results (policies, playbooks, templates, dashboards)
* Led sensitive internal investigations across cultures and time zones
* Implemented AI-assisted legal ops with cycle-time and quality gains under basic guardrails
* Clean compliance/audit record
* Nice to have: experience with GDPR/UK GDPR, AI governance and safety frameworks, IP/Open Source AI licensing, FCA/MiCA/SEC-style crypto regimes, export controls/sanctions, health/financial data rules
What you will do
Legal Strategy → Business Outcomes
Translate company strategy into a quarterly legal plan with owners, SLAs, and decision rights. Track risk reduction, time-to-yes, and control maturity.
Product & Research Counsel (AI/ML)
Advise early on model/data pipelines, evaluations, and deployment. Provide crisp go/no-go guidance with auditable reasoning and respect for boundaries.
Crypto & Web3
Design compliant token, staking, or rewards mechanics where proof of public benefit drives value. Build disclosures, policies, and surveillance/monitoring where needed. Maintain an up-to-date regulatory map (UK/EU/US and priority markets).
Protect core IP while embracing openness. Stand up inbound/outbound licensing, contributor agreements, provenance and attribution policies, and an OSPO-like function.
Data Protection & Safety
Embed privacy-by-design across the model/data lifecycle. Maintain DPIAs/RoPAs/DSR processes, cross-border transfer tooling, retention/Deletion, and incident response. Target zero material findings and rapid closure of actions.
Commercial & Partnerships
Run a contracts engine that scales: template library, negotiation playbooks, AI-assisted redlines, and clear fallbacks. Aim for median review cycle <5 business days on standard deals and <24h on low-risk paper.
Corporate, Governance & Funding
Keep board hygiene, equity/incentives, and entity management tight. Support capital formation and web3-adjacent structures aligned to public-benefit proofs.
Investigations & Disputes
Lead fair, timely internal investigations. Manage pre-litigation posture and outside counsel efficiently with defined SLAs and consistent documentation.
Legal Ops & Metrics
Publish simple, trusted dashboards (intake → decision time, risk flags, outside counsel spend, policy coverage). Build a searchable knowledge base with provenance.
Working arrangement
* On-site in our London office, 5 days per week
* Reports to the COO
* Some international travel and right to work in the UK
How to apply
* Complete all required questions
* 1–2 short paragraphs on what you built, the business impact, and the metrics you used
* Optional: a brief case on a complex regulatory issue, investigation, or dispute you led (anonymised), including your approach, decision, and learning
* If you have worked with Open Source AI communities or research teams, share how that shaped your approach
