The role
The Development Engineer will support the delivery of residential developments—ranging from traditional housing to RC‑frame apartment schemes—by managing all engineering, infrastructure, and technical design elements from land feasibility through to construction, reporting into the Lead Engineer/Head of Engineering. The role includes managing statutory approvals, coordinating consultants, supporting infrastructure design, and ensuring engineering solutions are cost‑effective, buildable and compliant with planning and adoption requirements.
Key responsibilities
* Manage highway adoption processes including Section 38, Section 278, and Minor Works Agreements.
* Liaise with local highway authorities to secure technical approval for road layouts, junction designs, and off‑site works.
* Coordinate applications for highway licences required for surveys, investigations, or construction works.
* Ensure engineering input into development layouts, including tracking analyses and forward visibility compliance.
* Manage the drainage adoption process under Section 104.
* Coordinate technical submissions for foul, surface water, attenuation and SuDS proposals.
* Liaise with water companies, Lead Local Flood Authorities, and Local Authority drainage boards to secure timely approvals.
* Provide engineering input into site‑wide levels strategies and drainage infrastructure requirements.
* Review and coordinate RC‑frame structural detailing with structural engineers.
* Coordinate architectural and engineering detailing with internal technical colleagues.
* Input into remediation strategies and ensure integration with ground conditions.
* Tender, instruct and manage site investigations, utility surveys, and topographical surveys.
* Review geotechnical and geo‑environmental reports.
* Contribute to contamination assessments and remediation strategies.
* Feed engineering requirements into early‑stage utility strategies.
* Coordinate diversions, new supplies, and protection works with the in‑house utilities team.
* Ensure layouts and phasing reflect utility constraints.
* Use Microsoft Office applications for reporting, programming and budget monitoring.
* Use AutoCAD or relevant design/drafting software.
* Prepare and manage engineering budgets for each development.
* Provide engineering input to viability assessments.
* Track expenditure and support procurement and tender processes.
* Support engineers, planners, designers, architects and landscape architects.
* Ensure engineering constraints are reflected in planning submissions and working drawings.
* Chair and coordinate multi‑disciplinary design team meetings.
Experience and qualifications
* Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
* Experience within residential development, engineering consultancy, or housebuilding.
* Strong understanding of UK planning, adoption and regulatory frameworks.
* Competent in interpreting geotechnical, structural and engineering reports.
* Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office.
* Understanding of RC‑frame structural principles.
* Strong organisational and communication skills.

Additional information
The standard default full‑time working hours in the office are 8am‑5pm with core working hours 9am‑4pm.
