Job Overview

We are looking for a Medical Education Fellow to join our cohesive team, working in the Education Department and in clinical areas helping to improve the postgraduate and undergraduate education through a variety of teaching modalities. The Medical Education Fellow will be delivering education sessions ranging from curriculum based learning to ad-hoc teaching sessions, responding to individual’s needs as required.

The role will allow the opportunity to develop teaching skills, extend knowledge of educational theory and undertake educational research. It will suit an individual who has an interest in medical education and educational research alongside their clinical commitments.

The level will be MT03/04. The Medical Education Fellow, as well as being responsible to the DME, will have an Education Supervisor to help with career progression. The post holder will also be supported by a dedicated team of Medical Education Officers.

This is a very exciting time and an excellent opportunity for a doctor who is looking to develop their teaching skills in a supportive environment.

We will encourage you to undertake and will fund a PGcert offered by a local HEI. You will have a study leave budget of £800, which will allow you to attend courses in your specialty.


Main Duties of the Job

The primary focus of the Fellow will be in supporting the pre-existing education programmes running across the Trust and developing further programmes.

Working in the education department and in clinical areas helping to improve the postgraduate and undergraduate education through a variety of teaching modalities.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

* Conduct / lead a structured educational session
* Continually maintain and develop own professional knowledge and expertise in line with the need of the Trust, GMC and other professional bodies
* Support the development of the annual work plan in relation to medical education
* Design and deliver educational programmes across clinical education, and support medical education and learning and development, ensuring that organisational requirements are met
* Plan, design and deliver education across the organisation, at all levels, using both formal training delivery and workplace based approaches
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of adult learning methodologies, and actively engage with education research across the health education pathway
* Maintain current active professional registration
* Act always in accordance with professional Code of Conduct and guiding documents
* Adhere to Trust Policy and Procedure
* Maintain up-to-date skills and knowledge and maintain awareness of professional issues
* Maintain own educational development and encourage new practice in others, whilst embracing new technologies e.g. e-learning
* Support Nurse and AHP training where appropriate
* Facilitate MDT learning opportunities
* Support the Simulation Lead and Human Factors & Simulation Specialist Lead with training for the Trust, ensuring that learning interventions enable the Trust to deliver high quality safe care to its patients and meet its regulatory requirements
* Participate in the Medical Education and Simulation Working Group meetings and undertake projects tasked from this group

The duties above indicate the post holder’s main responsibilities but are not exhaustive. They may be jointly reviewed with the post holder according to experience and to support service development.


Education And Development Responsibilities

* Develop personal skills in education, including an understanding of adult educational theories, knowledge of educational theory and undertaking educational research, assessment and evaluation methodology, knowledge of human factors and crisis resource management, and their role in simulation based learning and the wider clinical environment
* Participate in the development and teaching of new and existing teaching courses, for postgraduate and undergraduate trainees, including simulation programmes
* Undertake evaluation of courses and teaching delivered to ensure that trainees’ needs are continually met
* Undertake research in medical education and aim to present research and novel ideas at local, national and international meetings
* Assist in the completion of work-based assessments for trainees
* Participate in medical education committee meetings

Qualifications


Essential Criteria

* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
* Appropriate professional postgraduate qualification e.g. MRCP, MRCS etc.
* ALS
* Full GMC Registration and License to Practice at the time of appointment


Desirable Criteria

* Intercalated BSc or equivalent Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD
* Teaching Qualification
* Publications in recognised medical or academic journals


Skills


Essential Criteria

* Excellent written and verbal communication
* Project Management skills – experience of participating in or leading projects
* Good organisational and time management skills


Desirable Criteria

* Leadership or management roles

* Evidence of good career progression as demonstrated by employment history – at least 12 months working in the NHS
* Experience in delivery of teaching and education
* Evidence of active participation in audit
* Evidence of interest and experience in delivering teaching to medical students and trainees

* Peer reviewed publications
* Experience of setting up courses
* Faculty on local or national courses
* Experience of Quality Improvement projects
