On behalf of The UK Health Security Agency we are looking for an Infrastructure Engineer for a 5 month (Inside IR35) contract. Remote working with occasional travel to London.
UKHSA's Pathogen Genomics strategy aims to improve our understanding of those pathogens that pose the greatest risk to the UK population, integrate genomics into every day public health decision making, and enhance the evidence-base for policy making. To accomplish this- UKHSA is building a new suite of data capabilities to support the collection and integration of genomic data into our everyday life.
We are looking for an experienced AWS Infrastructure Engineer to lead the design, build and automation of cloud infrastructure for our Genomics Data Platform. You will work closely with software engineers, data engineers, data architects and product teams to ensure our platforms are secure, scalable, data-driven and integrated with our complex on-prem estate and HPC platform.
As an Infrastructure Engineer your main responsibilities will be to:
* Design, implement and manage AWS infrastructure for the Genomics Data Platform.
* Collaborate with colleagues in DevOps, Architecture and Cyber Security to define infrastructure specifications and requirements.
* Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for rapid, reliable deployment across the platform.
* Integrate AWS cloud services with on-premises HPC and database clusters for hybrid workflows.
* Manage large-scale data transfers and integrations between on-premises and AWS environments.
* Ensure platform security, compliance, monitoring, and cost optimization.
* Collaborate with developers and data teams to support analytics, reporting, and data science use-cases.
* Troubleshoot, tune, and optimize infrastructure and data pipelines.
Essential:
* Experience with large-scale data integration and transfer between on-premises and AWS environments.
* Experience of AWS Architecture and IaC (Core Services, Glue, EMR, VPC, Terraform, CDK, CloudFormation).
* Experience of Automated deployment and infrastructure qualification pipelines using Terraform, Python, is mandatory.
* CI/CD and GitOps experience (GitHub Actions or similar, Python, Lambda).
* Experience and confidence troubleshooting deployments from the command line (Bash, Linux, Python).
* Understanding of DevOps best practices and cloud security, strong knowledge of security and compliance is critical.
Desirable:
* Experience supporting high-throughput Scientific Computing HPC applications, including exposure to Bioinformatics workflows (e.g. Nextflow).
* Exposure to high throughput streaming and IoT integration architectures (e.g. Kafka, MQTT, Flink, IoT Core)
* Knowledge of cost management and performance optimization in AWS.
* Knowledge of data engineering, including exposure to scalable big data tooling (e.g. Apache Spark, Airflow).
