About us

The Vale of Glamorgan is welcoming applications within its Flying Start Programme. Flying Start is a Welsh Government funded programme and is available in targeted areas supporting all families to give 0-3-year olds a Flying Start in life. The programme aims to provide intensive support services for children and their families.

The focus of the programme is on promoting language, cognitive, social and emotional skills, physical development and the early identification of high needs. This is achieved through the delivery of health support and guidance, parenting groups and support and free part time childcare.

We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Fathers and Significant Others Worker to join our Flying Start Parent Support Team. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference by supporting fathers and male carers to build strong, positive relationships with their children and engage fully in their child’s early development.

You will work directly with dads through one-to-one sessions, group activities, and community engagement, helping them to overcome challenges and access the support they need.

About the role

Pay Details: Grade 7 SCP 20-25 (£32,597 - £36,363) pa
Hours of Work / Working Pattern: 37 hours per week, Monday - Friday
Main Place of Work: Barry located but covering the Vale of Glamorgan
Temporary Reason: Welsh Government funded post through Flying Start

Description:
Supporting Flying Start Team to enable families to access services and improve life chances for their children. Achieving this through the development, delivery and promotion of positive parenting and increasing aspiration.

Working one-to-one in the home, small groups and in partnership with other agencies and authorities.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide targeted support to fathers and male carers within the Flying Start programme.
2. Organize and deliver dads’ groups, workshops, and activities that promote positive parenting.
3. Work collaboratively with families, professionals, and partner agencies to ensure holistic support.
4. Maintain accurate records and contribute to service planning and evaluation.
5. Promote inclusion and equality in all aspects of service delivery.

About you

You will need:

6. Experience of working with children/families on a one-to-one basis in a community setting, within a family support field
7. Experience of directly supporting fathers, male family members, and significant others
8. Experience of supporting families with complex needs
9. Experience of a multi-agency approach to deliver joint outcomes
10. Knowledge of Children and young people’s developmental stages
11. Risk and protective factors in parenting
12. Knowledge of early intervention and prevention programmes such as Flying Start and Families First
13. Positive parenting - current messages and practice
14. Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Act 2020 (Children Wales Act)
15. Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively (in both written and oral form, as well as via virtual platforms)
16. The ability to work in partnership with parents, team members
17. Being tenacious and working hard to engage those who are considered ‘hardest to reach’ yet often most in need
18. Be passionate about working creatively with the parent(s), developing a tailored package of support
19. The ability to work across different settings, e.g. clinics, community centres, homes, etc.
20. An understanding of group dynamics and effective facilitation
21. Proficiency in I.T. (word, excel, outlook etc.), as well as casework management systems
22. Degree level or equivalent in Social Care, Education or Early Years/Family Support.
23. Ability to inspire and motivate, with a positive outlook
24. Ability to work as a positive member of the team and collaborate with others
25. Flexible, energetic and collaborative approach to work
26. Ability to drive/travel throughout the Vale or between locations as appropriate
