Main duties of the job
You will work across ophthalmology services with rotational duties across outpatient clinics and surgery day cases.
Outpatient services – manage nurse-led specialist clinics, provide leadership, coordinate patient and clinician support, and assist healthcare assistants with visual assessments, diagnostic tests, and imaging.
Day Case unit – support patients preparing for ophthalmic surgery, ensuring safe, personal, and effective care and acting as their advocate.
You should have a passion for improving patient and relative experiences, a sound clinical knowledge base, and well-developed communication skills to motivate staff and engage patients.
Good time management and workload prioritization skills are essential.
You will support training, teach and assess junior staff, and participate in service improvements and meetings.

Established in 2003, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust provides high-quality acute secondary healthcare for East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen, treating over 700,000 patients annually with a staff of over 8,000. Our ophthalmology services are spread across three main sites: Royal Blackburn, Burnley General Hospital, and St Peters Centre Burnley, with a peripheral clinic at Clitheroe Community Hospital.
Outpatient services operate Monday to Friday, 8 am to 5/6 pm. Day cases run Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 6/7 pm, with some weekend coverage as part of a team roster. Flexible working arrangements may be available where feasible.
