Overview
You will be an essential first point of contact for all the court users. There will be regular contact with the judiciary and assisting the administrative staff. You will meet members of the public, which may include vulnerable witnesses, and their legal representatives; prepare court /hearing rooms, and complete documentation, as well as ensuring the court runs efficiently. You will also carry out some general clerical work as required to support the work of HMCTS. Ushers work within a team with regular management support and are responsible for their own time.
This operational, customer-facing role requires the successful applicant to be office-based to provide HMCTS services to the public. This is a part-time role for 22 hours over 3 days.
Responsibilities
* Provide frontline contact and assistance to court users, including members of the public, vulnerable witnesses, and legal representatives.
* Prepare court/hearing rooms and complete required documentation to support court operations.
* Carry out general clerical tasks to support HMCTS operations and ensure efficient court running.
* Work within a team with regular management support and manage your own time effectively.
* Deliver a customer-facing service in a way that supports the public and court users.
Working arrangements and visa information
* The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows; this is informal and non-contractual, blending time between base location, MoJ sites, and/or home. The role can only be worked in the UK.
* All employees spend a minimum of 60% of working time in an office (subject to local estate capacity). Some roles may not suit Hybrid Working; arrangements will be discussed with successful candidates and reviewed regularly.
* For nationally advertised roles, appointments are made to the nearest viable office to the candidate’s home postcode (HQ, JCC, or JSO), with pay scale aligned to location. Current MoJ employees may have changes to base location and pay scale accordingly.
* Part-time, flexible, and job-sharing patterns are welcomed where they meet role demands and business needs, in accordance with MoJ Flexible Working policy.
Qualifications and attributes
* Friendly and approachable manner with strong communication skills; able to assist and address court users clearly and confidently.
* Ability to multi-task, prioritise, and organise own time; comfortable using IT and maintaining accuracy in court documents.
* Attention to detail and adaptability to learn new software packages; able to provide calm, professional support in challenging situations.
