The Opportunity

Our 12 month Clinical fellowships are aimed at enabling outstanding predoctoral clinical fellows to develop their ideas and pilot data to apply and obtain an externally funded clinical training PhD fellowship in a subject area related to the themes of the Edinburgh BHF Centre of Research Excellence: Heart Diseases, Stroke & Vascular Dementia, Cardiometabolism, Advanced Vascular Imaging, and Data Driven Innovation.

The Opportunity

Our 12 month Clinical fellowships are aimed at enabling outstanding predoctoral clinical fellows to develop their ideas and pilot data to apply and obtain an externally funded clinical training PhD fellowship in a subject area related to the themes of the Edinburgh BHF Centre of Research Excellence: Heart Diseases, Stroke & Vascular Dementia, Cardiometabolism, Advanced Vascular Imaging, and Data Driven Innovation.

Applicants are expected to submit a brief plan for this future proposed PhD fellowship and detail how they will use this 12 month fellowship to support the PhD fellowship application. They must have already discussed this plan with a potential supervisor within our centre well in advance of submission and gained their support.

This post is full-time (40 hours per week). We are open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working.

We will also consider strong applications from allied health and care professionals who can demonstrate significant engagement in research, and who are open-minded regarding research topic and methodology.

Your Skills And Attributes For Success


* Outstanding predoctoral clinical fellow with motivation and enthusiasm to develop an excellent Clinical PhD fellowship application to external funding sources which fits within the themes of the Edinburgh BHF Centre of Research Excellence
* Excellent team player and collaborator to contribute as a key member of a team of researchers, under supervision from the Principal Investigator
* Exceptional communications skills and attention to detail to maintain accurate and up-to-date records to document research progress and take a lead role in writing up data for publication.
* Drive and motivation to undertake training in in clinical and/or laboratory methods with the expectation to maintain clinical skills by some participation in clinical on-call, out-patient clinics, investigation lists and continuing professional development.

An Honorary NHS contract will be sought for the successful post holder. You therefore must be eligible to hold an honorary contract with NHS Lothian, and must also be registered with the General Medical Council.

Salary will be determined on the basis of previous service in the NHS training grades. Normally you will be matched to your current incremental point or nearest equivalent. If you are currently a member of the NHS Pension Scheme and are employed in a clinical post it may be possible for you to remain a member of the NHS Pension Scheme.

About The Team

The Centre for Cardiovascular Science (Head of Centre, Professor Andrew Baker) is a world-leading centre of excellence that integrates discovery, translational and clinical cardiovascular research to transform the diagnosis, treatment and management of people with heart and circulatory diseases.

We are working with local, national and international partners and funders to develop solutions to our research challenges with regional and global impact.

Research in the CVS is investigator-led. CVS has 50 principal investigators leading research across four themes: Metabolism Obesity & Diabetes (MOD), Hypertension & Renal (HART), Cardio-metabolic Imaging (CINEMA), and Coronary & Valvular Heart Disease.

The technologies employed within CVS span basic molecular and cell biology, to model organisms (flies, fish, rodents), to clinical trials. The ethos in the CVS is that, whatever their background, investigators can use our network of collaboration and training to deliver fundamental discoveries and implement them in translational research.

CVS hosts two British Heart Foundation research centres: the Centre of Research Excellence (REA3) and the Centre for Vascular Regeneration (CVR).
