Why this role matters

This is a technical expert role in Research and Network Strategy where the individual will apply their key expertise within a clearly defined sphere of technical knowledge to complex business issues or opportunities. The role holder actively engages with colleagues to progress new research in important technical topics and supports the realisation of business value from research and innovation outputs.


This role is based in Ipswich or Bristol and our hybrid working model means you are expected to be in the office 3 days per week.

You'll have the following responsibilities

Technical expert responsible for maintaining expertise in a specific technical domain.


• Responsible for intellectual property creation, contributing to patent filing with their team and supporting IPR exploitation where appropriate
• Accountable for performing research in a specific domain (i.e. Cloud Infrastructure Research) or area that is typically unknown, complex, high impact and high value across multiple domains.
• Responsible for authoring technical papers, capturing intellectual property.
• Responsible for developing novel research work and contributing towards recommendations for future research projects.

You'll have the following skills and exprience

Skills

• Technical domain expert: Technical or domain expertise. They continually develop their expertise in a key technical area so they are recognised as a technical expert in that domain
• Qualifications: Strong academic record in technology specialism, qualified to degree level and may hold a post-graduate qualification
• Expert communicator: Presents to peers and managers about their research and area of technical expertise.
• Experienced in open innovation: Contributes to creation of patents, technical publications, conference presentations etc.
• Concept Evaluation: ability to spot relevant innovations, horizon scanning, determine relevance for the business, develop an effective conceptualisation and build trials to test the concept.


Experience

Technical domain expert: evidence of significant knowledge and skill relevant to Cloud Infrastructure, including:

• Networks fundamentals (MANDATORY)
• NFV/Virtualisation core principles (MANDATORY)
• Infrastructure/hardware aspects of telco cloud (MANDATORY)
• Able to file new IPR naturally as it emerges in the candidate's research (MANDATORY)
• Linux- admin, OS, networking (DESIRABLE)
• Software-defined networking and its role in telco cloud deployments (DESIRABLE)
• Automation principles applicable to telco cloud and cloud native infrastructure (DESIRABLE)
• Other (non CPU) hardware in telco cloud infrastructure (DESIRABLE)
• Data centre design fundamentals (DESIRABLE)
• Tooling/instrumentation (DESIRABLE)
• Software development (DESIRABLE)
• AI/ML and applicability to network management and optimisation (DESIRABLE)
• Experience of publishing papers and delivering conference presentations (DESIRABLE)
• Significant delivery: evidence of business impact through contribution to delivery of research (MANDATORY)
• Stakeholder management: evidence of managing project tasks within local team. (MANDATORY)
• Innovative Thinker: ability to spot and identify new innovations and act to bring them in and capitalise and create value (MANDATORY)
• Commercial Applicability: understanding the business opportunity and potential value around relevant innovations (PREFERRED)
• Problem solving, intellectually curious, comfortable taking ownership and responsibility
• Self-starter, proactively working with minimal guidance
