work

CPI is recruiting for an Upstream Scientist 2 to join the established and growing Synthetic and Mammalian Upstream team, based at the in Darlington. The team of high-performing Scientists are part of CPI’s Biologics Technology Area. The team play a key role in delivering a wide range of exciting projects focused on the development and optimisation of processes for the production of biologics including viral vectors, mAbs, RNA therapeutics and recombinant proteins.

In your role as a Scientist 2, you will use your experience and interest in upstream processing to support the delivery of innovative projects using different cell types (e.g. CHO, HEK, MDCK, MSCs and IPSC) to produce biological products such as recombinant proteins, antibodies, exosomes and viral vectors. The role will involve developing, optimising and scaling up cell culture processes using suspension, adherent and/ or continuous cultures. As well as biological therapeutics, CPI is also involved in the development of cellular meat products, owing to its expertise and state of the art facilities to develop the technology and accelerate its path to market. You will be part of a team that generates innovative solutions to problems and will work in a dynamic and fast-moving environment across a wide range of projects.

The Upstream Scientist we are recruiting will quickly adapt to the different aspects of the role and enjoy working in a dynamic and collaborative environment on a range of projects. Pre-existing cell culture experience and experience in solving technical challenges and leveraging input from senior colleagues are essential to be successful in this role. Candidates will be committed to and will actively seek opportunities to develop themselves within this new and exciting role.

The Role

1. To keep up to date with developments in areas relevant to the role, and/ or legislative and SHE-related changes as communicated by senior colleagues, ensuring understanding of these and any associated new best practices, methods or techniques.
2. To set up, plan and execute experimental / pilot scale runs and analyse, interpret and report the results of these within agreed timescales and standards and in accordance with project requirements.
3. To present and formally report experimental conclusions and supporting data for internal peer review and submission to clients, to agreed timescales and standards.
4. To be responsible for providing clearly documented records of technical data, decisions, methodologies, calculations and software use in an agreed format.
5. To take ownership in agreeing weekly workplans with line manager, project manager(s) and other relevant stakeholders, and delivering plan to agreed schedule.

The person we are seeking

Candidates are required to be educated to a minimum of HNC or Foundation degree (or equivalent) level in a Scientific or Engineering discipline plus relevant industrial experience. It is essential that you are able to exhibit the professional mastery of principles and practices of molecular, cellular and vector biology, and upstream science gained in academic or industrial environments. The successful candidate will have practical mammalian cell culture experience and experience setting up and running bioreactors.
