Occupational Therapy Technician – Community Stroke Team

The closing date is 05 May 2026.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Warwickshire Integrated Community Stroke service. This fixed‑term (12 months) post is for the Occupational Therapy Technician in the North team and may also be offered as a secondment.

The community post covers two distinct care pathways – active rehabilitation and neuro‑management. As part of the multidisciplinary team in the community, you will need to work independently within patients' homes under distant supervision and prioritise and manage a demanding workload.

Post holder responsibilities include planning and implementing interventions using best practice Occupational Therapy knowledge, analysing clinical, social and environmental factors, developing therapeutic relationships, liaising with carers, MDT and external agencies, and meeting recognised professional standards and therapy pathways.


Main duties of the job

* Provide effective service delivery within the speciality.
* Work autonomously and manage an agreed caseload of patients under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist.
* Follow recognised professional standards, agreed therapy pathways and best practice under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist.


Job responsibilities


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

* Provide a high standard of Occupational Therapy intervention and assist in maintaining service delivery by flexible and efficient prioritisation based on clinical judgement under supervision.
* Apply the principles of the Mental Capacity Act in gaining consent or best‑interest decisions.
* Negotiate with client/carer to formulate SMART goals, complete outcome measures and contribute to assessment tools under supervision.
* Plan, implement and review patient‑centred assessments, interventions, using meaningful graded activity based on best practice and Occupational Therapy models.
* Interpret and analyse clinical, social and environmental factors to contribute to optimal intervention and discharge plans.
* Maintain knowledge of external agencies eligibility criteria and Trust policies for patient referral.
* Maintain competency in the use of all equipment for daily living and support junior staff and clients in using it.
* Carry out moving and handling of patients using appropriate equipment under Trust policies.
* Comply with legislation and the Professional Code of Ethics, Conduct and Standards for Occupational Therapy.


Measurable Result Areas

* Prepare and tidy designated therapy and office areas in a professional manner.
* Comply with Health and Safety guidelines, Medical Devices Policy and maintain a safe environment.
* Maintain accurate patient records, reports and activity data and report in appropriate forums.
* Contribute to Key Performance Indicator targets and record them in line with Trust policies.
* Prescribe and order equipment for daily living under supervision, within budget limits.
* Identify and manage stock, assist in annual stocktake in line with OT procedures.


Communications and Working Relationships

* Develop effective therapeutic relationships and manage communication barriers.
* Support patients/carers who may become distressed during interventions.
* Contribute to and support Occupational Therapy Fieldwork Placements.
* Assist in teaching and training of staff and other professionals.
* Assist in induction of new OT staff and students.
* Notify Stroke Clinical and Operational Lead of staff absences when senior staff are not available.
* Respect equality, dignity and diversity and provide sensitive service.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* GCSE level A–C in English and Maths or equivalent.
* Minimum Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care or equivalent higher apprenticeship.
* Care Certificate or willingness to attain it.


Experience

* Experience working in a healthcare or educational environment.
* Experience working within a team.
* Experience working with children and young people with developmental needs or disabilities.


Skills

* Implement and evaluate treatment.
* Undertake regular updates to develop specialist skills and competencies.
* Knowledge of specialist skills in supporting functional treatments, interventions and equipment reviews.
* Recognise when escalation to a registered professional is required.
* Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
* Good written, verbal and non‑verbal communication skills.
* Present information accurately, clearly and logically.
* Organise and prioritise workload.
* Work autonomously.
* Write accurate and legible patient notes.
* Experience supervising others at work.
